Richie Martin's Stance/Swing

Mods, please feel free to merge this, but I did not see it anywhere else on the forum.  As someone who, rightfully so, does not believe in Richie Martin's future with this team due to his age and poor showings over the last few years, I was impressed in the albeit small sample size of at bats we saw this weekend.  He seems like he has a new stance geared towards generating more power, and instead of looking like someone who got lucky to poke a homer around the Pesky pole last year, could actually hit 8-12 home runs in a season.  The triple to dead center over Taylor's head was jacked.  While I still do not believe he will be a big part of the future, I'd like to see him get regular bats over the next few weeks, or at least until Urias is healthy.  I know he was also getting a lot of extra base hits at Norfolk, so perhaps this change in approach has been going on all year.

I think Martin opened some eyes this weekend. I think I'd like to see him at least split time with Mateo at short and get some time at 2B vs LHP while Urias is down. This guy was fairly highly regarded as a prospect when they got him. He was really overwhelmed in that rule V season and then all the injuries - he may just be a late bloomer. This is the time to find out.

All good points vab. Agreed.

I don't know if Martin can play third, but he sure looks like a more than competent utility guy. He's got well above average speed and has logged CF innings in the minors. If he can hit a little, it's one spot (albeit a relatively minor one) we don't have to worry about.

Martin is fine as a utility guy though he's going to have to tighten up his defense and base running. He seems to have finally added a little strength and can drive the ball a little more now at the plate. Saying that, utility guys can't be unreliable in the field or on the base baths with dumb errors.

I and RZNJ have discussed this in multiple threads. Go Richie Martin!!! It amazes me how few watch games on milb.tv.
