Keep Mancini Thread

Last year for Soler the Royals got a college reliever who'd received a 350k bonus.

Because I don't have Mike Elias' job and am sentimental about these orange laundry wearers I've gone as far as to suggest (if the team had been as bad as expected) we should DFA Mancini as a kindness to him so he could have some agency in choosing which genuine contender to go have a 118 OPS+ for.

I think Moose has it right that if I put myself in Trey's shoes, a 15% chance here after 8/2 might mean more than a 60% chance somewhere else.

We could use some fast-moving college relievers to switch weeks with Joey Krehbiel next year though...

We could trade Mancini, but we are not desperate to trade Mancini. That is how I view it. I don't think he has even half the value to the rest of the MLB that most think. So I don't think he will go anywhere until the end of the year. I even think it would be fine to sign him for 3-4 years, if he truly wants to stay.

So let's say it takes 3/$36 or so to extend Mancini, some combination of a discount for us and good will for him.

And let's say he could get you some teams no. 10 prospect.

Do you make that deal?  Do you assume that Stowers can produce at OPS+ levels at or near Mancini for league min over the next 3 years at the same time?  If not, a year later your looking at trying to patch work your DH slot.  Why not take out some of the future risk with a minimal deal through his prime years.

3 years is a definitive no way.

Why?  Don't think he'd produce at 2 WAR for 3 years?  Anything credible?  He's only 31 at the start of next year, so we'd have him in his 31-33 ages.

I don’t think he’s getting 3/36 from anyone. I think he’d take 3/24. He might not find anything better.

That’s definitely fair. I’d do it for a comp pick, wouldn’t you? Doubt we get that though.

Round A (picks 33-39), or Round B (67-74)?

For what it’s, worth, 50% of players picked 33-39 have reached the majors the average value of a 33-39 pick is 3.3 rWAR.   41% of players picked 67-74 have reached the majors, and the average pick in that range is worth 2.6 rWAR.

Logic tells you that Trey Mancini is not going to be worth 2.6 rWAR in the final two months of 2022.    Therefore, yes you’d trade him for the comp pick regardless of whether it’s Round A or B, unless you think there’s a significant chance that he helps to get the O’s to the playoffs this year.

Nice research! Agree, doubt we get that but you know Elias would pull the trigger on that deal.

    • Holliday went 1 for 2 with 3 walks on Friday night. 2024: .444 OBP, .911 OPS MiLB Career: .447 OBP, .931 OPS His OBP is EXACTLY what this O's team needs, would fill a key offensive weakness at 2nd base, help grind opposing pitching, and magnify the power up and down the lineup.  It's all dependent on his ability to throw and play 2B at a passable level. If Holliday starts to hit at the ML level, the question of who bats leadoff is over for the foreseeable future and we can go back to complaining about 1 slumping hitter or backup catcher at the bottom of the lineup.
    • This. We literally have no lineup holes right now, and Mayo, Norby, Jax lurk. Any trade discussion should center around the four most essential and crucial elements to O's success for the balance of the regular season and playoffs: 1. pitching 2. pitching 3. pitching 4. damn, forgot the 4th one. oh yeah, its pitching.
    • All I know is that Suárez has earned at least one more start, after today.
    • Scherzer still looks like a guy who would be a nice add to our rotation in the second half if the Rangers are sellers.
    • Not happening. I don’t disagree, but Kremer will be slotted in the rotation.
    • I wouldn’t either but the word here is that he’s going back to rotation . Suarez supposedly the one  to be moved to bullpen . I think they should wait and see if Irvin can rebound . If Irvin can’t match Suarez’s work, then he should be moved to bullpen
    • Yes that’s what I was asking. COC was completely off base in his comment. Judge is a great player, and apparently a nice guy. I have nothing against him, or most Yankees, for that matter, though Gil’s tats are off putting. I am expecting a bit of pro Yankee bias, but that’s ok. Also, home runs is a very glittery stat, and might sway some folks. But it should be Gunnar, at least based on the first 81.
