2022 8th Round Pick (#227): Cameron Weston - RHP - (Jr) University of Michigan

Ranked #337 prospect in 2021 draft
Weston only became eligible for the 2021 draft when it was moved back to July, thanks to a birthday in August. A short righthander listed at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, Weston was lights out as a reliever for Michigan in the shortened 2020 season and made a successful transition to a starting role this spring. He posted a 2.81 ERA over 83.1 innings and 14 starts, with 69 strikeouts (7.5 K/9) and 29 walks (3.1 BB/9). He has a solid, but unspectacular, three-pitch mix, including a fastball that sits in the 90-92 mph range and touches 95, a fringy breaking ball around 80 mph and a changeup in the upper 70s and low 80s that might be his best overall pitch. He goes to it regularly and can land it down in the zone to both sides of the plate. There’s no carrying tool or pitch with Weston, nor is there significant physical projection, but he’s young for the class and shows solid pitching ability.

Initial take: His split-change is his outpitch and if he can maintain his velocity in the mid-90s vs closer to low 90s he's got a chance.

Well it's nice to see we are using some top 10 round picks on pitching for a change.

Elias' first 3 years drafting, rounds 1-10:   4 pitchers, 22 position players

So far this year:  4 pitchers, 6 position players (if you count McLean as a pitcher, which he is listed as)

I'm assuming that changeup has something to do with it.  

Seems a bit underwhelming though.  I've not seen a Mayo/Baumler type today.  Maybe I'm missing something but I don't think I am.

Whether it was  a change or splitter,  it looked useful. 

I'm gonna trust the algorithms and information they have available, particularly with Beavers, Wagner and McLean.

No.  You can still use your slot savings after round 10.  There’s no slots after round 10 though.  I believe anything over 100k is “overslot” unless something has changed.

This. And you don't lose the slot amount if the player isn't signed. The team went with safer signs in the top-10 rounds. I'm expecting a couple high upside HS picks in the next 10 rounds with the hope of signing one or two of them using the savings.

      I would say it’s without a doubt better competition.   Many current and former ML players in the winter leagues.   The Arizona Fall League is basically AA.

      Per CBA rules, hasn’t most (90%) of the deferred buyouts have to be already set aside in present value?  This is why not shown in the payments itemization.  Same with Bobby Bonilla for NYM and why Shohei Ohtani shown in terms of AAV present value.

      1.5 months of data shouldn't make any difference. These guys have too much upside to trade. I'm most concerned about Mayo, more due to lack of position than the early hitting results. Still, no regrets even if Skubal was available, which I highly doubt

      I'm not in the group that expected us to miss the playoffs a few days ago.  This thread was a bit silly at the time, and has now become completely irrelevant.  But stating we are going to win 5 of the next 9 games as a fact, is just as ignorant as the people who think we are going to lose out or continue the tailspin to the point that we will miss the playoffs.  As much as I can't stand constant negativity, I also can't stand people who have no tolerance for any negativity, or pessimism, or whatever you want to call it.  If you just want to be a part of a cheerleading group and resent any criticism of the team, a hardcore fan message board is probably not the place for you.  Not just speaking to this poster, but as a retort to similar opinions in general.

      Would the team be any better off with Skubal than they are now, considering the hitting woes?  I think that’s debatable, and questionable enough that I wouldn’t give up that high level talent to find out.    Who knows if the Tigers would have even done that?  They’ve made a nice run behind Skubal and the rest of their staff since the deadline. I think it’s a good chance they extend him to lead that young team into the next several years of what they hope are contending teams. Decent position player pool there.

      The Tigers are a fun story, reminiscent of the ‘22 birds a little bit (if that team had had a CY winner heading the rotation). But we need to end the dream for them this weekend. Take care of business versus Detroit and next weeks games will hardly matter. We can get our staff set up for the WC series after their next turn. That would be ideal.
