Damn, Texas really wants to win and win NOW.

Good for them. It's nice for fans when their team wants to win. Hopefully Orioles fans will get to experience that feeling again some day 😆

Umm i guess the last 6 years of being under .500, they didn’t “want “ to win.. then.  But Now.. they want to win now lol

Maybe the Frazier signing for $8M made it so Eovaldi was out of their price range.  Laughably pathetic if the Orioles cannot afford $8M and $17M contracts, but also laughably pathetic insofar that Frazier was not nearly as necessary as someone like Eovaldi.

There’s no way the Frazier contract should have any impact on anything the O’s want to do.   If they’re not making moves, it’s because they’ve decided those moves aren’t prudent, not because they already spent the money on Frazier.

Look, I have defended the O’s low payrolls the last few years as prudent under the circumstances.   But the team has plenty of cash.  They had operating income of $85 mm in 2021, probably $100 mm+ in 2022.   There’s zero reason they couldn’t afford a guy like Eovaldi regardless of the minor moves they’ve made this winter.

If they have plenty of cash, they should use it to improve the team.  Plenty of options have been there all off season.  It just boggles my mind that they think $8M for Frazier is a smart use of funds, while $17M on Eovaldi (a player who misses bats and has higher upside than Frazier at a position of need) is not.

It's just stupid to me (the team's decision making...your post is probably correct).

I don’t disagree.   The offseason isn’t over, but I’m very unimpressed with what they’ve done to this point.

If Elias is able to make a trade for another quality starting pitcher, I will be fine with this off season when considering the likely inclusion of Henderson and Rodriquez on the opening roster and the later arrivals of others like Westburg, Ortiz and Cowser.  But, absent that trade (I don't like the remaining free agent options), I will also be disappointed.  The Marlins, Mariners, Guardians and Twins are all likely trade partners for starting pitching.  At this point, I'm frustrated, but not without hope.

They aren’t trading for a starter that likely greatly moves the needle. Best case is Pablo Lopez who is good but not great. He has upside though.

But Pablo Lopez doesn’t save this offseason.

I can’t think of anything that they would realistically do that can save the offseason. They have completely botched this and have given the team no momentum that they built up.

I agree with that, totally.  100%.

But for an organization that seems way more comfortable with low payrolls.  I can easily see (and I bet you can, too) that 18 million to Gibson and Frazier is probably akin to that feeling you had when you were a kid and you started wading towards the deep end of the pool.  And when your feet weren't touching the bottom and you had to tread water to keep your head above the surface, that little panic feeling?  I'm assuming that's on par for whoever's in the Warehouse and controlling the budget.

IMO, it's not so much the money, it's the fact that these are one year deals.  For whatever reason, this team is petrified of a multi-year deal.  I get it, 5 years for a guy might be a bit much but 2, 3?  C'mon, this is absurd.  If 18 million shouldn't prohibit this team from spending more money this year, it shouldn't prohibit this team from spending more next year.

We'll see, but there aren't really any potential moves that could turn this offseason around.

What were you hoping/expecting?

My best case scenario was something like sign Bassitt/Taillon and trade for Pablo Lopez.

I should say that I wanted Rodon but I never expected it.

To be fair, Eovaldi wasn't going to "save this offseason" either. Really, the offseason is only "saved" by the Orioles going out and winning.
