I don’t doubt that certain mechanics put more strain on the arm but I also think they are designed to create the most torque and velocity.   No one wants the kid with perfect mechanics and throws 89-92.    They want the kid who throws 93-96 and if he hurts his arm somewhere down the road that’s just the price of doing business.    I certainly think there’s a reason a lot of pitchers don’t have a perfect follow through.   It isn’t being taught that way.

FWIW, I watched Bright in the NCAA tournament and compared it to Cole Irvin and Austin Voth from yesterday.  I don’t see much of a difference.  All three rotate on their landing foot so that they are sideways to home plate as they finish the pitch.   As I said, old school would have a pitcher squared up to home plate in a perfect fielding position.    You don’t see that as much anymore because they are more concerned with getting the most on each pitch and less with what position your body is in after you throw that pitch.

Baseball America.  Potential 2023 breakout pitchers.

Trace Bright, RHP, Orioles: A 2022 fifth-rounder out of Auburn, the Orioles tracked the righthander throughout his draft spring. His stuff ticked up once he got into conference play and he became a target for Baltimore. The early returns so far look as though Bright is a potential find for an organization that's made that a habit in recent drafts. Bright uses four pitches led by a fastball that flashes above-average attributes. His fastball sits 92-95 mph with 19-20 inches of induced vertical break from a 12:45 tilt. His primary secondary weapon is his high-spin, mid-70s curveball with spin rates in the 2,800-2,900 rpm range and serious depth consistently clocking readings of -18 to -19 induced vertical break numbers. His slider is a sweepy low-to-mid-80s offering he's still learning to command, while his changeup has taken a sizable step forward, showing 17-18 inches of arm-side run at times in the mid 80s.

I heard a funny comment on him before last night: “I don’t think 27 K/9 is sustainable.”

Last year top of the K/9 scale in Aberdeen's league was 15.

McDermott was 14, Ignacio 13 and Tavera 12 for some Ironbirds, or I suppose part-time Ironbirds in McDermott's case.

The Yankees seem to find guys growing on trees for their bullpen that can throw upper 90’s with a nasty breaking pitch.  Maybe Bright can do the same for us.  Obviously, hoping he remains a starter.

He obviously was struggling to command, but he was hurt by two errors. Why the Orioles keep running out Valdez at 2B is beyond me. Crampton or Servideo should be up there playing 2B. At least the defense will be better for the pitchers.

by my math he averages 2 ks an inning so far
