You mean the Hicks with the OPS >1.0 with the Orioles? Yeah, he’s really killed the team this past week.

You're giving @Just Regular a run for his money here.

Yea,  the guy who wasn't on the roster a week ago.  Notice that a change improved the team? That is my direction.

It was a long-considered change that took advantage of Hicks' unique situation w the Yankees.

O'Hearn and Lester were similarly acquired during the off-season, i.e. with foresight, analysis, and judgement.

It's baseball, a 162-game season during which we have yet to suffer a losing streak anywhere close to the ones experienced by some of the best teams in Orioles history.

Mullins is a big, but temporary loss to the team that Hicks has so far filled in nicely for.

The slumping hitters will rebound and the hot hitters will slump.

The real clear needs are plain as day to everyone: a replacement for Grayson--a lot hangs on how Irvin performs in his imminent return to the rotation; better middle relievers now that Givens and Tate can't be relied on. The FO has proven to be very good at finding bullpen arms. I'm not worried at all.

Translation - we're sucking right now.

Also, deep cut of Apollo 13 quotation....great movie.     I once had a coworker who could not believe the 3rd actor with Tom Hanks and Kevin Bacon was the same dude who was the lead ocean explorer in Titanic, but Bill Paxton had range.

Instead of starting another doom/gloom thread, I'll pile on here...

1. BB% and K% going in the wrong directions.

Thru 5/25 (end of NYY series) 50 games:

K% = 21.15%

BB% = 9.79%

5/26 thru 6/7 11 games:

K% = 25.06%

BB% = 5.37%

Less baserunners, less balls in play moving runners, less chance of more guys on base...

2. Another thread talked about lack of pop.  It relates back to the BB% and K% (and likely other approach disciplines) in the point above to some degree.

Thru 5/25:

OPS - .753

HR/Game - 1.2

5/26 thru 6/7:

OPS- .627

HR/Game - 0.6

A bit hat-tip to opposing pitchers doing their job.  A bit Mullins' being out.  A bit SSS.  But (as a team) the approach needs to get back to where they were the first 50 games.

Huh? The data you posted do not show an improvement.

Those guys have been doing well the last few weeks, but were not part of the original core group of players. The O's had to bring up career AAA AAAA type players to keep the ship going- if not things would have been worse.

"There's a thousand things that have to happen in order, we are on number 8, you're talking about number 692..."  "We're not doing this gentlemen, we're not gonna go bouncing off the walls for 10 minutes, because we're going to just end up right back here with the same problems..."

One of the best movies ever

    • It can’t hurt to do research on him and place a call to Cards GM & see what’s involved . We need SP help .
    • Here is my roster. Wasn't an easy task with some tough decisions C  Adley Rutschmann 2022 1B Rafaeil Palmeiro 1998 2B Brian Roberts 2009 SS Miguel Tejada 2006 3B Manny Machado 2015 OF Adam Jones 2015 OF Albert Belle 1999 OF Trey Mancini 2017 DH Chris Davis 2013          Bench Gunnar Henderson 2024 Bench Melvin Mora 2004 Bench Jay Gibbons 2003 Bench Matt Wieters 2011 --------------------- SP Mike Mussina 2000 SP Jason Johnson 2001 SP Wei-Yen Chen    2014 SP Erik Bedard 2007 SP John Means 2019          RP Jorge Julio 2002 RP BJ Ryan 2005 RP Jim Johnson 2012 RP Koji Uehara    2010 RP Zack Britton    2016 RP Felix Bautista 2023 RP Darren O'Day    2014 RP George Sherril 2008
    • You must choose a 26-man roster from 26 seasons. Here are the rules. Ignore 2020 Select 13 position players, with 9 starters and 4 bench players Select 13 pitchers, with 5 starters and 8 relievers You can only select one player from each season from 1998-2024 (exclude 2020) You can only select a given player ONCE  Starting pitchers have to be starting pitchers, relievers have to be relievers I will amend rules as appropriate from any suggestions you have. Go.
    • Now being reported on MLB Network in middle of Braves-Mets postgame wrapup.
    • Adley's teams have beaten Witt's teams by about 25 games/season the last 2 years and hopefully can maintain a lead the next 2-3 days. If McCann bats 9th, and Ragans is gone before Batter Faced #27, would the risk of forfeiting the DH be considered if a righty reliever is attacking McCann in a key spot?    Hyde has at least Kjerstad and Holliday on the bench, and maybe one of Mullins or Cowser if Slater starts. I am guessing the roster tomorrow will be 14 bats and 12 arms, so you might have one extra somebody for the team's 36th or 45th plate appearance. One factor against taking the chance...zombie runner is gone so the two teams could have long extra innings for the first time all year.
    • Not sure if it’s been shared already, but saw this and thought he would totally make sense as someone to target in the offseason. Cardinals are looking to reduce payroll, though not sure what a reasonable offer looks like for a 35 year old pitcher making 25 million a year for the next two years. A very light free agent class this year. Someone will definitely overpay for Burnes and I hope it’s not the Orioles. Severino, Buehler, Bieber and Max Fried are also intriguing. What say you? https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/09/report-cardinals-open-to-offers-on-sonny-gray.html
    • I was looking that up too. He was in the bullpen throughout 2018 brewers run. Had a very solid first playoff start in 2021, then a not so good one in 2023 as you posted. Postseason is a different animal, and he’s got some experience, but he’s not proven in the playoffs. Time to make that money Corbin!
