So if a team were, for some insane reason, want to offer Hicks a three year 45 million contract at the end of the season he doesn't have an ability to sever his contract with the Yankees and accept?

Not that it would ever happen but that seems odd that it wouldn't be an option.

That is correct. They could extend his existing contract past 2025 but that is the only way he'd get more money.

I don't think this is right.

If some team offers Hicks 3/45m at this offseason.   The Yankees  pay 9.5m for 2024 and 9.5m  in 2025 plus 1M buyout for 2026.  That is 20m.

The new team would pay 5.5m in 2024, 5.5m 2025  and 14m for 2026.  For a total of 25m.  That goes to Hicks  over and above the Yankee contract.

The Yankee contract is written in stone just like Chris Davis contract was.  Anything over the Yankee contract is additive to Hicks.

Of course, I don't think anyone would offer such a contract with Hicks' injury history and age.

That doesnt stop another team from paying more than minimum just because the Orioles are cheap. Hicks is worth more than league minimum, and is a free agent. Other teams don't care that he has 9.5 million coming from the Yankees. If Kyle Gibson makes 10 million and Adam Frazier makes 8 then I dont see why a team wouldnt pay 10+ for hicks on a one year deal if he produces the rest of the way. There is no way hes just "available" at league minimum for Elias to scoop him up.

You clearly don’t understand how this works.  Every dollar up to $9.5 mm that some team pays Hicks is a dollar less that the Yankees have to pay Hicks.  He doesn’t benefit at all unless some team pays him more than $9.5 mm, which will never happen.

I dont understand the contract details and how it works completely you are right. But I am not sure how you came to that conclusion from my post.

I proposed exactly what you are saying.. that a team could pay MORE than the 9.5 million for Hicks. My comparison was Frazier getting 8 million and Gibson getting 10 million. I am not sure what makes Kyle Gibson worth 10 million and not Aaron Hicks.

I would say then that you have a higher opinion of Aaron Hicks than I do, and higher than probably most of the posters here.   He’s had a good month, and I’m happy about that.  But nave you noticed that he’s hit .095 over his last 7 games?   He’s more likely to be the Aaron Hicks of the last five years than the Hicks of the last month.   And nobody’s paying $9.6 mm+ for that.  Now, if he plays super well in the 2nd half of 2023, maybe the situation will be different.

I think we are agreeing. I dont think Hicks is a 10+ million guy. I was just saying that it was a possibility if a team did think that.
