I agree, it's not likely. I really think this team needs another bat, so I'm offering this one up to the universe. For sure Elias is prioritizing pitching. This would be a luxury, but I'd love it.

Montgomery spent most of his career in the AL East. He's got a 3.37 ERA/2.1 WAR this season. He's 30. He's got a career 1.35 ERA in the postseason (2 outings).

 

I know a lot of people hate rentals, but (if the Cardinals were interested) I think this would be a nice move.

With Hall's status it's hard to envision dealing him, though it wouldn't be a shock.  I'd love to acquire Montgomery, as I think he's an ideal target. Maybe Povich and Max Wagner?

Ohtani brings that bat though. It would be magical. We would really have to start churning out players from the international market.

Also, I don’t think there is a such thing as a “crazy” trade idea, because nobody thought we’d be where we are, and nobody thought Ohtani would be linked to us with any seriousness.

To me, the biggest problem is the Angels have been winning. Just don't think they'll decide to trade him while they're in wild card contention.

I still think that Hader/Snell makes the most sense.  What package get them?  What about Mountcastle and Povich?

Yeah, that’s the other factor. Also, the Yanks are technically out of the playoffs. You know they want to make a splash. Boston too in some regards.

I think we’d at least have to give up Povich, Hall, and one of McDermott/Showalter.

For me I'd rather trade for Bednar if the Pirates decide to listen to offers. More years of control.
