I did say "kind of" .

You're right it's not weak but you do expect to get much more for him despite the 1 year of control. We gave up nice players but in a vacuum it's surprising Brewers couldn't get a third player from us or another team.

Kimbrel Cano Wells Cionel Coulombe is a solid core group. Some combination of Irvin, Tate, Baumann, Baker, and Webb for the other spots. Losing Wells hurts but we don't be needing the pen as much now that we added a legit ace to the rotation.

I don’t see that as a solid core group. I see it as potentially good enough but there’s a ton of what if and question marks there.

Wells was always going to the pen, so this isn’t a new addition to the pen. In hoping they can use some of the ML positional depth to add a high leverage reliever.

Last season, I was waiting and waiting and waiting for our "Verlander trade" at the deadline to finish off the similarities to what the Astros did in 2017 (as mentioned a few pages back in an X post from Ben Verlander).  Burnes was the guy who had piqued my interest because of his disgruntlement with the Brewers' front office that prior offseason, but he seemed completely out of reach. 

And then we traded for Flaherty and it just felt like as long as JA was still in charge, we were destined to continue dreaming wistfully, while our window of opportunity slipped away. 

Can't believe this is really happening.  My brief spring training visit next month cannot come too soon!

For my money, the problem with the pen is the quality, moreso than the quantity. 

I have full faith that Elias/Sig will be able to fill out a perfectly workable full-season bullpen with what they’ve got — particularly given that there will likely be a surprisingly effective addition or two to the personnel between now and summertime. 

But my concern is the top 3-4 guys that will carry most of the weight in October. I’m not sure we have the high-end arms to lean on in those postseason matchups — in much the same way that our 2023 starting rotation seemed to have been built more for the long haul than for the short sprint. Bit of a bummer that our one Burnes year happens to be our one Bautista-less year.

Would really love to add one more power arm to the back-end of the pen. Maybe that’s more of a trade deadline move for Elias/Sig, though.

Watch Joey Ortiz become one of the top fielding shortstops in baseball. Like Bradish said after Ortiz made that phenomenal diving catch. (To paraphrase) - "I've seen him do that time after time coming up in the minors. We've gotten used to it. He's a security blanket back there."
