Hyde just said in postgame that he left Tate in for the 8th because there wasnt another right hander available. If they dont even consider Vieria to pitch then get him off the team...

I can't believe Vieira is still here. It's like trying to hide a Rule 5 pick on the roster. Lopez might not be great but he's a guy you could have thrown yesterday with a 4-run lead.

What are we even doing here? Acquiring Viera is a total head scratcher and then to not even use him is even more so.

If they can't put this guy into ANY relatively close game, he needs to go.

I would be fine if they acquired him as the cost of getting the young guy.

But I don't see why he's on the 40.

This. I still think Hyde should have put Coulombe in for the 8th but it’s hard to blame him when his only other available RH option was Vieria.

Seems like there is at least a game a week (even if they win that game) that makes it blatantly obvious how big of a problem the BP is. Both the depth and the lack of high end 7th/8th inning options. It’s on Elias and he probably needs to add 2 pieces.

At this point, after seeing this game and about 3 other games lost this year, I have come around to the fact that the O's are going to have to trade for a shut down 7th and 8th inning guy.   I think that is all they need.

But for now they are that ONE guy short of having a BP that can win a WS this year.

I would argue they are 2 short. Webb and Cano are not back end guys with their average to below average K rates. In order of high leverage to low leverage, I like the idea of:

Kimbrel, Trade 1, Coulombe, Trade 2, Cano, Perez, Webb, Akin/Suarez

Cano is still fine against RHB’s and Webb has reverse splits. They need a righty version of Coulombe, someone that is a true backend guy and can get both lefties and righties out.

They can probably manage with just 1 addition and keeping 2 of Akin/Suarez/Tate in the pen. But having those 2 additions and not having to rely on Cano turning back into 2023 Cano seems smart. The BP is the clear weakness of the team and this could be the only year with Burnes. Might as well load up.

Very possible  although I do think they may have the 2nd guy already in the minors or on the roster as a current starter.

Trading for 2 guys is to me, a major misallocation of resources.    One shut down guy...ala Andrew Miller?  I get that.

But you shouldn't have to trade for 2 relievers.   If you don't have a guy in the minors who is good to very good and who can't come in and throw 1-2 innings?  You have problems.

Irregardless they are 2 bullpen arms short.

I would bring Povich or McDermott up and see if they can be an impact arm.  Why trade, if they can get some experience and also maybe do the job?

I don’t think we see McDermott this year.  His control is a major hurdle.  I’m not sure how Povich would do out of the pen.  I imagine it would be a challenge to get used to. But, I do like the idea of bring pitchers in as a reliever to give them a taste at a young age like the Os did back in the day.
