The 2024 Trade Deadline

Recommended Posts

It seems like the Cubs and Rangers both did enough the last week to stay in at least another stretch.      Cubs could pass Arizona first series after the break - both CHC and TEX embody 4 games under .500 being in for now.

The Mariners dud against LAA kind of makes the AL West an honorary NL kind of scenario.

Then in the AL East/Central, we've got Tampa at .500 offloading an Aaron Civale here, a Phil Maton there.

SEA is in trouble. May only be one playoff team from the West.
NL has 12 teams in it. Cubs sweeping Orioles saves their season for now.

TB will do what they always do. They have no business being .500 the way they have played and yet they are.

The Cubs wouldn't. Why would they give Taillon away for a package led by a guy who wouldn't be in their top 20 prospects and eat half his contract for the right to do so? I'm not claiming Taillon should net a 50FV guy, but this makes no sense. His contract is reasonable for what he is, a low end 3 high end 4. They have no need to salary dump him because they have a lot of money coming off the books for 2025, which could be almost 70M if Bellinger opts out. They're planning to be competitive in 2025 so why dump him just so you then have to bring back in a new guy who is likely more expensive? If they're eating literally half his contract, they'll get a far more substantial return than this.

I’m not sure how much …. Maybe they eat part or all of this year. They the Orioles would owe the next 2… not sure.

Nationals due diligence as they have declared with the Hunter Harvey move.

Kyle Finnegan is pulling $5M in 2024, and has one expensive year of Arb to go in 2025.    He is perhaps getting too many saves to be efficiently tendered this winter.

Dylan Floro is on a 1-year deal at $2.25M.

As ever with BAL-WSN, TBD if Rubenstein's ownership brings any kind of detente to the clubs, who seemingly have been reluctant (forbidden?) to partner on deals in recent years.

Verducci is apparently reporting that the Os and Dodgers are putting offer for Skubal.

In what universe can the Dodgers with their Minor League assets outbid us compared to what we have?

This has to have some sort of Tiger's slant to attempt to get more teams in on the bidding.

If any of this is true and we are able to land Tarik Skubal, what a day on the OH that will be! Some will love it, more will hate it (because of who we have to give up). Let the fireworks begin!

Will Elias be willing to give up one of Holliday, Mayo, or Basallo? I don’t think you get him without it. If that’s the case we’d need to extend him IMO.

That where the financial support comes into play. This and extending Burnes.

I would trade Holliday for Skubal, and add secondary pieces like Stowers or Norby in order to get additional prospects back as well. I wouldn't want to trade any of Basallo, Mayo, or Kjerstad for him, especially considering the Tigers would want more players going to them in addition to any of those three.

Why would we need to extend Skubal now?

Elias doesn't have leaks typically, so it's always hard to believe these kinds of rumors that mention the Orioles.

That said.

If you want to have the best possible rotation for a World Series run, you can't do much better than Burnes/Skubal/Rodriguez. And Skubal solves a big 2025 problem also, so it's definitely the best possible move Elias could make for a SP.

While Crochet and Skubal have been similarly brilliant this year, thinking like Elias does Skubal does probably have some reliability and gas left in the tank edge for 2024.

Both are far bigger risks than it usually tolerates, but in a lesser of two evils kind of way I could see the decision being prioritize Skubal.

I guess for the Tigers the basic question is do they look at Tarik Skubal or Jackson Jobe as the franchise player?

Skubal would move the odds of any LAD-BAL showdowns the next few years.
