Austin Hays Appreciation Thread

A context clue to me about the immediate clubhouse temperature yesterday is that Roch Kubatko did not go to Cedric Mullins for Round 1 of observations about this transaction.

Healthy human respect for too soon?     Roch's back to blogging everyday so we'll see what the next few days bring.

Hays is on the present Mount Rushmore of 2016's 3rd round with Zac Gallen, Sean Murphy and Jesus Luzardo.     That foursome is ahead of the 2016 1st round's best four career to date in rWAR.

My first memory of Hays was from a callus.  I  can't remember if 2017 or 2019.  He went flying thru the air like Superman after a ball that was an impossible catch.  He made the catch!  I knew the guy was going to be special.  Hays never quite reached the heights with the bat I hoped for but provided plenty of defensive highlights with his glove and his arm.  I can see that he was respected by all his teammates and he will be missed.

Hays was one of the bridge players along with Mounty and Mullins from the Buck years to this team. That was big. It’s not his fault we wasted those years.

Just goes to show that why would a rebuilding team that’s 2-3 years away want a Norby or Stowers?

I wish Hays the best in Philly. He fits in there.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. Just want to correct you: my religious views play a very small part in my revulsion at the playing of "God Bless America" at NYY games.

Maybe he does not like "God Bless America" because it was written by a progressive pretty much marxist writer if I am not mistaken.

"God Bless America" was written by Irving Berlin in 1918 for a musical he was writing while he was in the Army stationed on Long Island.  It was cut from the musical and forgotten for 20 years. You're probably thinking about "This Land Is Your Land," which Woody Guthrie wrote in 1940 as his response to "God Bless America."

I had thought the Red Scare was over, and I hope that I would never dislike a song, or book, or movie, or show because of the politics of the author.

Roch did interview Mullins after last night's game:

From MLBTradeRumors today:

"The Phils acquired Austin Hays in a buy-low deadline pickup. Philadelphia projected Hays as at worst a right-handed platoon partner for Marsh in left field. Hays spent most of his Phillies tenure on the injured list and didn’t produce in limited playing time. He hit .256/.275/.397 with 19 strikeouts and no walks in 80 plate appearances after the trade.

MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projects Hays for a $6.4MM salary in his final season of arbitration. He’s likely to be non-tendered. The Phils could stick with utility player Weston Wilson as a platoon partner with Marsh. The other outfield spots are areas for potential improvement, though neither is without complications."

What a fall from grace for Hays, from All Star to fringe MLB player in a year. It reminds me a bit of Trey Mancini after he left the O's. If he gets non-tendered, do you think the O's would consider him on a one-year deal? He's younger and better than Austin Slater, playing a similar role.

I doubt the Orioles will go back to Hays unless Hays is ready to be a part-time 4th outfielder and take the salary that comes with that.

He'll most likely hope to get a one-year deal somewhere where he'll have an opportunity to compete for full-time work in the hopes of a comeback season that could potentially get him a bigger contract the next year.

Unfortunately, I just think father time and injuries have just caught up to him.

    • No one is trading anything close to that for Crochet. But I agree..spend money, not prospects.
    • That's some high standards.  Sinker ball types are always going to have higher FIPs and lower K rates.  The truth is, Quintana is probably out of our price range.  That price range is probably no more than the standard Lyles/Gibson/Kimbrel/Frazier price range until otherwise seen.   Back to Quintana, I think he's the type of guy that if healthy could be a real weapon for us with our home ballpark and a home playoff game if we ever get deep into a series.
    • That's really the role/opening for next year that we need.  A RHH OF that could play some CF preferably.  Although, I'd lean more to and offensive minded portion of that versus the ability to play CF.  LF is big though at home. I think it's a role that Elias fills through trade, waivers, or maybe even a competition of milb deal types.  Like a RH Sam Hilliard type.
    • Yeah, he would be good in the Austin Slater role if he was willing to accept it. Not sure that he would be quite as good defensively in CF, given that he has played fewer than 100 innings total in CF since 2021. I highly doubt that he is ready to accept a role as a platoon player though, given that he is not yet 30, and he was an above average starter by rWAR from 2021-23. I doubt he is tendered a contract, given his $6M 2024 salary. His best bet is probably to sign a one year deal with a team that doesn't hope to compete, to attempt to reestablish himself as an everyday player, while the team that signs him can hope to flip him at the trade deadline.
    • I agree. He’d be a great regular season fit in Cinncy’s ballpark. Maybe that confidence of knowing he can hit the ball out to LF at home covers up his other decencies.  As for Crochet… can’t we just resign Burnes?  Crochet would probably cost Holliday, Basallo, and Mayo. Didn’t the deadline teach us the cost of pitching? I’m for trading Mountcastle. I’d hope we can surround the young hitters with a Burnes led staff with adding a vet bat to the DH/1B mix. Other than that, I think we will roll with what we have. And we should.
    • Hays will want to start somewhere. He shouldn't start for us. We don't want him sitting on the bench looking dejected while Kjerstad and Cowser are mashing bombs onto Eutaw Street.
