Yanks Release JD Davis, Any Interest? (Update: O's sign him)

Davis is on a minor league deal, so Mayo is not getting sent down immediately.

But this makes a lot of sense for Davis and the Orioles. Right now Davis can play everyday in AAA, and if Mayo is struggling at some point they are going to send him back down to AAA so they can keep him ROY eligible next year. Davis gives them a one-for-one righty 3B/1B replacement if they decide to do that before Westburg is able to return.

Deep depth.  Sort of a Norby replacement.  Insurance policy if Mayo struggles.  Davis could also be our September 1st callup.

It is my hope that he has a key hit to screw the Yankees at a really great time later this year.

He's had some decent/good years when healthy.  Gap to gap type of hitter.  He takes walks.  He pretty much replaces Norby.

I think we have to get used to Norfolk being vet depth again like it was under Duquette, and not stocked with prospects like it's been recently.  When you're a contender, AAA is pretty much a taxi squad to support the MLB team.

Davis has a career .768 OPS vs. LHP.  Urias has a career .755 OPS vs RHP.

A possible platoon if Mayo falters.

Huh, didn't think they'd actually sign him.

Nice that it is a minor league deal, but hopefully he triggers his opt out at the end of August because Mayo has established a firm grip on the everyday 3B gig.

No, but he can replace some of our decimated IF depth, particularly a Plan B with recent MLB success if Mayo follows the Holliday character arc more so than the Gunnar character arc in his first taste of the bigs over the next couple of weeks.

Ideally he never suits up for this organization except in a Tides uniform, of course.

Elias has done a good job of quietly building AAA depth with 4A vet types the last few weeks to replace the top prospects that have either been called up or traded. 

We don’t need 6+ service years out of these guys.  Sometimes just 6 games or 6 weeks is fine.  Just to plug one specific hole for a short period of time.

JD Davis - a Norby replacement in a way. 3B/LF maybe some 2B. .768 career OPS vs LHP. 

Niko Goodrum - a AAA Mateo. IF/OF. Switch hitter. Speed. 

Garrett Cooper - depth behind Mountcastle. 1B. Career .801 OPS vs LHP. 

Livan Soto - Elias has acquired him 3 times this year in various ways. He can play SS. 

Vavra. Daniel Johnson. Two other guys that can come up for a week and not kill you. 

Point being, they’re just depth, but over 162 you need players to come up and plug areas of need. With all of our prospects now on the MLB team, AAA is going to pretty much be a taxi squad and an extension of our 4 man bench.
