Elias…DFA Kimbrel now!! (9/18: Kimbrel DFA'd, Baker recalled)

It was time.  Honestly though, he did have a stretch where he was considered an all star.  His bad stretches were really bad.  Hindsight 20/20, it would've been better to resign Gibson and then dealt prospects for a closing option at the deadline.

This move had to happen.  He wasn't going to be on the postseason roster.  If there even is a post season.

Yesterday Elias said Coulombe would make at least one more rehab appearance. So I think in a couple days, he'll be back.

It would have probably happened last night (his appearance) if not for the rainout. Hopefully he'll be back by Friday.

Mildly surprised they didn't wait for the Coulombe roster crunch to do it, but he wasn't making the playoff roster anyway, so there you go.

After last night there’s no way the elephant in the room can continue to be ignored. It was either DFA or Kimbrel goes to the IL with a “shoulder strain”.

Interesting that they didn't wait for one of their better relievers to come back.  "We'd rather have Bryan Baker than you" is a pretty emphatic statement.

If you're gonna get rid of him anyway, might as well do it now to get a fresh arm up in the interim.

I've been adamant that at some point, CK may have realized that this is probably his last year in a big league uniform. Whether that meant that he was overextending himself early then faltered due to fatigue, loss of control/command, etc.. I cannot say but I do wonder if that realization followed by a demotion, lead to him not caring as much. I mean, he's made his money for this year.

Some of the rumors about clubhouse stuff, I could see CK being at the center of that, even if not necessarily by his own doing but if others on the team felt like he received preferential treatment or if they felt he was being treated unfairly a la the James McCann and Burnes comments about him not making the All-Star team.

I'm speculating of course and probably somewhat irresponsibly repeating unfound rumors but I could see there being a division of the clubhouse (youngins / vets) around a guy like CK with how he has been managed. Whoever posted that Hyde and Elias were divided on Kimbrell, can you elaborate on that? Who was in favor of moving CK and who was in favor of keeping him?

I think the writing was on the wall after Hyde let him get torched last night. He's completely snakebit. It's gotta be in his head. How many times has he come in and get the first two outs relatively easy and then just implodes?

Probably doesn't help baseball-wise but I do wonder if this will help the psyche of the team.  Gotta be tough having a veteran guy around who has simply lost it.  Depends on how Kimbrel was handling it, I suppose.

I sort of speculated/questioned this kinda thing in the other thread. Even if CK wasn't the center of it, if you are a Gunnar or more so, someone like Ced who has had his own struggles but has been busting his ass all year to get back to respectability and an eight-figure reliever was getting more leash than other guys while struggling as much or more.. I can't think that doesn't have an impact on how players handle themselves. That isn't to make an excuse for how poorly they've played for the last 10 weeks or so but I have to believe that it contributes to the temperature in the clubhouse.

Unfortunately, it was time. Too late in the season to see if he fix himself and no way was he going to be counted on in any big situations the rest of the year or the playoffs.

I think he was a good guy who was at the end of the his career.
