O's sign Russ Ortiz

Gosh...the update on the Rowell negotiations is disturbing. He wants slot money and we are haggling over $100,000. Great way to start his Oriole career.

Relax people. It will get done soon enough. He will be in Bluefield before summer is out.

Bigbird, didn't you mention at one point that Mazzone didn't think much of Ortiz, or was I dreaming about that?

AFAIK, we don't know much about what Leo thinks, 'cause he doesn't talk about people much.

AFAIK, all we know is the Braves gave up detritus for him, at which point he went 21-7 for them, followed by a 15-9. Then they let him walk rather than pay him $7m/yr, which is something they do a lot.

ps: In 2003, he hit about like Fahey ;-)

Loewen didn't pitch well.He was lucky that's all.

I like the Ortiz signing because if he can help, it makes Lopez expendable or could allow them to send down Loewen. Problem is, I'm not sure if Loewen's better off pitching in Bowie or here.

Maybe Ortiz will be the baseball gods' payback for Ponson. Chances are he'll continue to flame out and be gone rather quickly but it's possible he can be resurrected so I guess it's worth a shot at this price. Loewen will be back in September at the latest and probably sooner. Hopefully he uses his experience in the majors to his benefit.

I don't know if you're talking about today or in-general... but either way, I think the kid did more than fine, assuming you don't have crazy expectations of him... pretty much all he has to do is quit walking people and fine tune some things... and the stuff he does right includes important things that you can't teach... I think he pitched *very* well considering he was supposed to be in AA... even with his flaws, he general left the game up to the BP, and we've had guys do way worse than that... the kid's a pitcher, and in my book he goes in the category of "Very Pleasant Surprises"...

If Loewen is sent down, and in the best of all possible worlds he should be, who do you want to see pitching the the next time the no. 5 slot comes due, next week? Chen? Ortiz? Aaaaaggghh! I'd rather see Loewen.

Ortiz is buy low. They're not going anywhere this year, why not see if he can get back to being a decent pitcher?? If he sucks, he gets DFA'd, if he's decent or better, like others have said, he allows you to trade R-Lo and/or Chen and he possibly fills out the 4th or 5th starter spot next year.

He walked too many guys but nevere really gave up big hits. That's not luck, its good stuff. He just needs to harness the walk problem.

I don't like the Ortiz signing if it means Loewen gets the boot.Loewen's innings are an investment in our future. Maybe they have a deal in place for Chen and Ortiz will go in the pen to take his place. I hope this is the case anyway.

Or Ottawa....Canadian native back on familiar soil - albeit all the way back east from BC.

    • I think at this point its just semantics regarding what a successful deadline looked like.  Elias upgraded three positions - SP, 2 RP.  Could there have been bigger upgrades?  Sure, at a bigger cost.  I think it was sufficient.  What has killed the team is the hitting.  If this team had hit like its capable of, and Soto, Eflin, and Dominguez all pitched exactly as they have, we'd all be feeling a lot better about the team, and probably lauding Elias for those three pickups and what a great boost they were at the deadline.  But we aren't hitting - at all - and I don't know what he could have done at the deadline to fix that. Already agreed that the draft strategy must evolve. I don't agree it was a bad strategy to do what they did so far, but it does have to evolve, just as the organization as a whole has evolved.  And I think it will.
    • I don't mean this as any kind of personal slight toward you. Please do not take this as such. But people/fans showed how they felt about this team who has been a loser for almost 4 months. And largely continued to hedge (beyond the Eflin addition) at the deadline. I bet you who did not have a bunch of empty seats for their playoff game yesterday .... San Diego. IMO it is because of the effort that they put in to continue to engage the fanbase. You can't sell people on the "homegrown" stars idea and no need to add a lot of outside talent. And then some of those "homegrown stars" who were so hyped flop. And then not extend the ones who turn into stars. That communicates a lack of investment by the org. Now when you add that up in the economy/2024 inflation and combine that with all of the other entertainment choices that people have in 2024; things like this will happen. Empty seats during a playoff game = an unengaged/unexcited fan base. The org has to own much of this.
    • I’m getting Gunnar as many PA’s as possible.    Gunnar Westburg O’Hearn Santander Mullins Mountcastle Rutschman Cowser Urias
    • I agree with the idea of stacking lefties in the lineup but O'Hearn scares me at 1st.  One misplay on a ball in the dirt and that may be the game.   I am one also that wouldn't mind seeing Holiday in the lineup as the DH.  We need people to get on base and he started tapping into that ability at the end of the season.
    • Without looking, I bet your holiday was worse
    • Mullins should absolutely Lead Off Today. Keep westburg 2nd then Gunnar, Tony, O'hearn, Adley, Cowser, Kjerstad, Holliday. Try to jump these guys early.
