If the market is a bit soft, I could support a bid for Fielder. But if we are talking Tex years and money, forget it.

This. I think I would do a 6/140 deal. I would not give him more years than that and would actually prefer 5/120 with a 25M option/2M buyout for year 6.

It may be that a 5/130M with an optout clause might get it done.....:scratchchinhmm:

I'd be open to something like this...ie spend WAY over value but for less years.

That said, the team that he'd be joining stinks, so why spend that much on one guy who isn't gonna make us win, and isn't gonna attract that many more fans? The answer...we won't.

Heyman at it again:

Jon Heyman

#orioles appear to still be in prince fielder derby' date=' which has been kept quiet. angelos and duquette both like stars[/quote']

Some more flavor from MLBTradeRumors.

The Rangers will not pursue Fielder, even though the division rival Angels signed Albert Pujols, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

The Orioles appear to be in on the Fielder derby, tweets Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com

Heyman says the Rangers still appear to be eyeing Fielder. The Rangers like Fielder's youth and middle-of-the-order presence. Though they'd like to lock Josh Hamilton up, they aren't offering the long-term security he seeks, Heyman reports.

I'm here... and I would assume it will be much softer for teams in contention.

For the Orioles, it'll be the same loser tax they'd have to pay for any high profile free agent. Fielder will sign elsewhere and it will become abundantly clear from Duquette and "sources" that the Orioles were never really seriously considered.

The team that he is leaving stinks without him and the "Unique Circumstances" of Ryan Braun.

I think the only shot we have at avoiding a steep "loser tax" is to offer Fielder an opt-out at the end of Year 3. That way, if we are still losers and he's miserable, he can leave. And actually, that structure would be fine with me, because it keeps Fielder incentivized to keep his numbers up.

I agree with this. None of the contenders really need him, so they can sit on around 5/125 M. But losers can give him an out while he is still in his prime and an opportunity for a bigger pay day.

    • JD Martinez would be a more of the same kind of acquisition. He is not an impact bat and he is a periphery (around the margins) piece at this point. Why not set the bar higher and sign Alonso? Acquiring Pete Alonso allows you to move on from Mountcastle and put Mayo (where he belongs right now) DH. It also allows you to move on from O'Hearn.  Alonso gets everyday ABs and Mayo does. Those two things to a large degree help solve the lineup imbalance against LHP. I know Alonso will cost real money. But again who are we paying? The money is there. It's time to start using it (if we want to win in October).
    • Your full quote said to use him as a DH for 100+ games. If you are worried about him being covered through his injuries - how can you assume he wouldn't be injured at the end of the season, going into the playoffs?
    • Here’s an exercise… it’s the postseason and the bases are loaded. The Santa scenario. Who on our current roster would you rather have up over JD Martinez?  Same fact pattern as Santander’s AB.
    • I think the title of this thread told you his status
    • Why did you pare down my quote about it being for the post season and not just 162?  People, always so quick to clown someone. Lmao. Damn. At least use my whole quote bro.  If you think that we don’t need at least one proven playoff bat then that’s ok. My point is, that we have enough 1B/DH options to carry JD through his ups/downs/injuries over 162 for his experience, leadership, and playoff experience.  You can disagree, but quote me right.
    • It's kind of amazing to me how no one knows Suarez's free agent status. I've heard it both ways. He's Schrodinger's baseball player.
    • Since JD Martinez has a career OPS of .950 in the postseason across 12 series and 151 plate appearances, I am sure our FO will have no use for him.  A veteran player who has experienced a lot of postseason success rarely helps young teams get to that next level.
