It's really genius. Go easy the first time through the order and use the juice you save later on, when the hitters have seen your whole arsenal.

Of course, Verlander doesn't even use all his pitches the first time through the order. If you have that many good pitches, just keep one in your back pocket for when hitters think they've gotten comfortable.
