Joe Saunders is not very good and will struggle against AL teams. If we wanted a lefty to pitch to a 5.00 ERA with 5.0k/9 we could have worked the 40 man to bring Eveland back. I'd much rather roll with the pitchers we have now then give innings to Saunders. I was pleased we dodged Joe Blanton - but now we went out and got the lefthanded Joe Blanton. I don't think Lindstrom is a huge loss - but he'd been effective when used and I'm not keen on giving up anything else - so it doesn't matter who the PTBNL is - we've already paid too much. I wouldn't have picked Saunders up for free if he was released - unless it was for Norfolk - so I'm not happy with this move. I'd be somewhat ok if we got Saunders for free and intended him to be an occasional lefty specialist/ and otherwise longman out of the pen - but they are going to start him. It's depth - and he'll be no worse than Hunter likely - but it's a move I'd rather have not happened. And if the PTBNL is anyone of anyone consquence I'm even more disappointed

I agree with most of this.

Stats prior to tonight's game.

78% of batters Saunders has faced this season are right handed.

Right handed batters vs. Saunders this year - BA: 303, OPS: 856

It's only 1 start, but I would much rather see Steve Johnson start instead of Saunders.

I'll say this, and I may end up wrong, but I'll say this anyway.

The Orioles had a nice mojo with Steve Johnson and Britton and Gonzo following Chen and Tillman.

Just because a guy is a veteran and a lefty doesnt mean he should supplant anyone of the back three.

Steve Johnson may end up a very average pitcher, but the fact is when called upon he ALWAYS delivered.

Why mess up a good thing? If it aint broke, dont fix it and any other cliche youd like.

I was against the Saunders acquisition and still am. I have even less enthusiasm for Randy Wolf.

I just hope the FO doesnt regret these unnecessary moves, but then, as always, they know baseball better than me..and have their reasons.

I'll just remain a skeptic.

We need EVERY win.

I think that is the point. For the first time all season, the O's had a rhythm with their starters and for some unknown reason are messing with that. I didn't understand it on Sunday, and with every game counting, performances like tonight are magnified.

I don't think anyone should panic quite yet. 9 times out of 10, the same series of events in the first inning leads to 0 runs being scored. Hardy made two poor plays that he usually makes, and they would have been out of the inning. Not saying he pitched great, but, he wasn't awful either.

That's a pretty generous assessment. Yeah, there have been a few uncharacteristic fielding plays, but also some extremely hard outs. I am 12 rows back of home plate and they have been hitting him hard all night. He's gotten a lot of very nice strikes with his curve, which has looked excellent, but the rest of his pitches have been very underwhelming. And the nice curve will get you some strikeouts but it isnt a bread and butter pitch you are going to get a lot of grounders and easy pops with. His fastball is very hittable.
