Didn't look great today. Doesn't look like the guy from last year. Slider isn't nearly as effective, isn't locating as well with the FB. The pitching is very depressing thus far. Especially the bullpen. It is as they say. Usually can't count on bullpens reproducing year to year. Stinky Pete leads the way in that.

The inability for relievers to keep inherited runners from scoring is something that causes starters ERA's to balloon. You have a good pen and ERA's stay a little lower. they get crushed and starters ERA's go up. I just do not trust Strop at this point and I do not think JJ is out of his funk. I think that he is going to blow 2 or 3 of his next 10 save opportunities. I am thankful for the way that Hunter has performed.

Hahaha--I guess you can say anything because your first name is "Cal!"

Ohh! Now it makes sense. Here I was thinking that "Calm Under Fire" was a strange choice of name for a person who panics about everything. But it turns out his name is just "Cal Munderfire". :D

Re Hammel, what I really noticed yesterday--and it's probably been the case all along this year, but I just hadn't caught it--is that his two-seam fastball is tailing, but isn't sinking at all. I only saw him pitch a handful of times last year, but I remember quite a bit of sinking action with that pitch, which led to a pretty good number of ground balls.

Take a look at the following:

Year IP GB/FB ERA

2006 44.0 0.75 7.77

2007 85.0 0.69 6.14

2008 78.1 0.88 4.60

2009 176.2 0.87 4.33

2010 177.2 0.87 4.81

2011 170.1 0.80 4.76

2012 118.0 1.14 3.43

2013 80.2 0.75 5.24

Consider how that 2012 season stands out from the others (and not just because I highlighted it in red :)). That's the two-seam fastball reclamation we heard so much about, but it seems to have gone poof this year. I'm not sure what's different; perhaps Hammel's arm slot has dropped a bit, but I'm just guessing.

Or as many called him after his color work during the playoffs last year, Cal M. Underfire, sometimes shortened to "that Cal MudderFr."
