Orioles, Rays and Mets all talking to Mariners about Nick Franklin

Yes, but we'll be in the same situation as we are now with those 2, down the road again with Manny, Tillman and Franklin if we get him. They'll all be free agents during 2017-2020..

I could throw Lough in there as well.

So? Every player can eventually become a free agent. Should we avoid players who may eventually test free agency? That doesn't seem like a great idea if you want to build a contending team.

I'd love for Britton to make the team but he doesn't have any options so trading him for something useful now may be smarter then losing him to waivers later.

I think he's locking up a bullpen spot and spot-starter (against lefty-heavy lineups / give Gonzo and Chen an extra day) if he keeps up his current form.

Nick Franklin - 2B - Mariners

Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that the Mets haven't had any significant talks with the Mariners regarding Nick Franklin since the winter meetings.

While the 23-year-old shortstop seems like a perfect fit and obvious upgrade for the Mets, they somehow appear content with Ruben Tejada manning the position to begin the season.

EdRod has more upside than Franklin, Franklin is major league ready and likely has a much higher floor. They're roughly equivalent in overall trade value and it just depends on your taste for those qualities in prospects.

If we can get Franklin for anything less than EdRod I would be ecstatic. There's a chance we could, but I wouldn't count on it. The best prospect below the EdRod/Harvey tier is probably Wright, and he just went down with the dreaded elbow /forearm tendonitis that sounds like TJS in the making. I don't think we have the chips to get Franklin without parting with EdRod, unless the Mariners are really interested in Norris, Britton, or Matusz in addition with some lower level prospects.

Mike Wright appeared fine yesterday.

I really want this kid now. It just makes too much sense. Allows Schoop to get his extra time in AAA to get the extra year of control, and gives us another good infielder in case it takes Manny longer than expected to return.

While we're at it, get Farquhar too! Another one of my favorites. I'd be much more inclined to give up EdRod if we were getting Franklin and Faquhar.

People really need to stop over rating Ed Rod he's a prospect nothing more. The M's wont give Franklin away. EdRod for Franklin is a fair trade.

Franklin is a prospect too...he had one partial season at the major league level where he wasn't all that good. I agree it's probably a fair trade but not because "EdRod is a prospect and Franklin isn't."

EdRod is 21. 21 in AA. Lefthanded. Good stuff.

So was Britton how did that work out?

Wait. What? We have no idea how that worked out. It was pretty good for a while, then he injured for a while, now he seems back in a pretty decent place... What was your point? That all prospects don't immediately become stars so we should... ummm... not be afraid to trade them for whatever we kind of need right now?

I've never been a fan of the "I can find a guy in a similar situation who did/didn't work out so we should generalize from that" concept.

He means well. He does.

Schoop may end up at 3B longterm, so pursuing Franklin is a good idea. E-Rod for Frankin is fair. I'd love to swipe him for less than that if Seattle is under the impression that they need guys that can help RIGHT NOW.

If you spend that kind of money on Cano, I would think you want to get help for right now and not two or three years down the road...

    • He simply doest have the stamina to dominate in back to back appearances, and he'll  be 36 in 3 weeks. I realize thats the LAST thing you want to hear about a closer, but Kiimbrel simply cannot be effective  with a lot of pitches or innings. Id like to see a closer by committee with Kimbrel maybe going twice a week...with 3 or so days in between. Then maybe consider Suarez, Cano, maybe Wells(when hes back) and then Kimbrel. I cant endure any more stress when this guy pitches...its like watching Don Stanhouse load the bases in every save situation and find a way out...And also, lets forget the Orioles need to score more runs to give these guys some room for error...I also say we MUST sit Santander, and maybe Cowser until they can figure out a strategy with coaches and avoid unproductive at bats...and Mullins isn't much better right now...though he's showing signs of breaking out.
    • I tend to believe Elias and sig don’t prefer the risk associated with high schoolers to begin with, based on only drafting 4 total in the top 5 rounds over the last 4 or 5 years. They’ve had success with the ones they did take, but of like 25 opportunities, they’ve only taken 4 shots at high schoolers. Hs pitchers even less, as they’ve only taken 1 in the top 5 rounds, and maybe 2 total.     Could they do it? I’m sure. Especially since we are conservative with pitchers and they work really short stints in the low minors, so he wouldn’t be overworked. But I also wonder if chasing the next ohtani is a pipe dream, and that many of these prospects would be better off focusing on one or the other.

    • He’s a very good pitcher, especially when he’s on.…he’s just not reliable.
    • And no mention of the pitcher with 18 consecutive scoreless innings!  🙂
    • Oh I think that’s a given, but team quality has much less impact on the playoffs, where a burst of luck can win a series for a team. After 162 games, the best teams will have the best record.
    • I think Suarez will be just fine. He’s been rested since last Sunday. Who knows?  Maybe he comes in and goes 2-3 IP to close out a W. He’s a vet. He’s pitched all over the world. He will be just fine out of the pen. It’s just a matter of how good he can be. We really need him to be in the Cano/Coulombe range.
