Believe it or not, after stomping on the Tigers for the 2nd consecutive night, the Royals are in 1st place in the A.L. Central.

Make that 10 straight wins for the team from western Missouri.

Former Oriole Jeremy Guthrie pitched a gem in a 2-1 victory over the slumping Tigers, who have gone 9-20 over their last 29 games.

The Royals are still hanging around in the A.L. Central, within a reasonable distance of the Tigers.

I think that the Tigers will probably win the division, but I would like to see the Royals at least give them a run for their money, if not overtake them.

And if that did happen ...... a potential Royals vs. Orioles playoff match-up would be interesting, considering that our old friend Jeremy Guthrie could be going against us.

And speaking of Jeremy Guthrie, he just threw a complete-game win last night (9 innings, 2 runs) against the Diamondbacks.

And in his previous outing, he shut out the Athletics for 6 innings.

Not bad for Jeremy, after he had an extremely bad month in July.

The last time that the Royals made the postseason was in 1985 ...... the year that they won it all.

Weridly enough the Tigers were defending champs that year. Of course, back then

the Tigers were in the AL East and the Royals in the AL West and there was no AL

Central. Anyhow, the Royals surge gets me thinking. I wonder what Tigers fans are

feeling right now. Make a huge trade to get David Price and they're only a half game

out of first place.

      I read and take in all your comments...Yes, it IS a long season with ups and downs...and Yes, I tend to vent after a loss to a crummy team where we got just 3 hits and stuck out 12 times...but NO ONE has commented on bringing Mayo up. This kid is part of our future...Urias isn't. Ramon's a solid glove man, but he is hitting .196. and you can ignore that if Mullins and Santander and Cowser were hitting...but they aren't..and while Gunnar and Mounty are going to contribute...they are scuffling now too..If we brought up Holiday, and it failed(for now) that doesn't mean Mayo will fail...He's not just a power hitter...he is a patient hitter who doesnt have a ridiculous strikeout or chase ratio...I'll ask again. Tell me what is the problem with bringing Mayo up? How much worse could he be than Urias?

      I'm kind of torn on this. A lot of slumps happen just because timing is off, nothing mechanical. Sometimes you're hot and sometimes you're cold. It's easily possible that Holliday's feel for hitting just had a slump at the wrong time. That happens. I know a hitting coach who talks about Pujols. When he went into a slump, he'd widen his stance and not even step. He removed all of that movement and basically hit with his hands and ungodly power. It was basically the same 2-strike approach that a lot of hitters employ. For my money, I don't love the huge load and leg kick. I think it really lengthens the swing in an attempt to generate power. When I saw Holliday, his swing looked just like that. Too long to catch up to elite ML pitching. Now maybe it was just a slump, but I'd personally prefer to see less movement, more contact, and progress from contact to power as he gets comfortable in the majors. And I know nothing, but that's my view of things.

      I'd guess it's McKenna down. McKenna is playing the Hays role and Kjerstad does something different, even if it's just the role of... DUMPH (Designated Urias/Mateo Pinch Hitter).

      As much as we'll speculate about the Kopechs and Helsleys of the world, much of the game is the Clubs sifting literally thousands of guys like this finding the right way to turn the dials. Last 12 months, Robert Stephenson's case has been a pretty dramatic one.    Was his labor valuable because of him, or how Tampa's braintrust saw he could excel? It sounds like Strowd hasn't always been a cutter only guy.    I'd guess the Sigbot is also equipping him with "here are the cliches we'd prefer you tell Roch Kubatko" if or when the time comes. The more Felix Bautistas you can make, the better...go Orioles coaches!
