2003 Snowpening Day was my favorite.....

20436fd5ca24a1f78512c57930d761b2.png?itok=5qRlfrxy

From the Sun:

March 31, 2003, at Camden Yards: Orioles 6, Indians 5 Kenneth K. Lam, Baltimore Sun

Four times, the Orioles have opened in March -- and this year they pay for the early start. Third-inning snow triggers a Cleveland rally when right fielder Jay Gibbons loses a fly ball in the squall. But the Orioles rally twice to tie the score, in the eighth and 12th innings, before winning on a bases-loaded single by Gary Matthews in the 13th. It matches the longest home opener (in innings) in team history.

One already mentioned and one not...

The Clemens game that apparently sent him running in rage around the Memorial Stadium neighborhood.

And 2004 - The year that we got the Sunday night game. Javy Lopez homered in his (and Miggy's) Oriole debut, beating Pedro and the BoSox on National TV.

Friday will mark my 22nd straight home opener and I hope that game replaces all of these...

April 10th, 2015

I was pregaming at the Casino, won $82,512, drank and eat like a king, the they took me to the game in a limo, instantly got a seat upgrade to behind the mound. I gave the Oriole hitters pointers and they told buck about the incredible knowledge i provided. Then I was welcomed onto the field in the 7th inning with a coaching contract and helped the O's win 47 to 0.

It was a great night but then after the game the Orioles did a background check on me and had to release me out of my contract. But this was a day I would never forget.

I don't recall very many from the ye olden days, but I had season plan and attended on.........

April 6, 2009, six years ago to the day today.

I'll always have a fond memory for that one, absolutely destroying the Yankees (CC especially) in our house. Topped off by a Cesar Izturis 2 run jack.

Jeremy Guthrie got the win.

2013, got a seat at the last minute for a decent price for right behind home plate, great seat. The place erupted with the Davis 3 run hr to put us up for good in the 7th. Was good weather and a great game.

It was nice and sunny that day. I am not hearing good things about Friday though :(

The excitement of Opening Day is that I've made it through another winter and there are six months, maybe seven, of Oriole baseball to look forward to.

For me, the Opening Day games themselves aren't a big deal. I've been to three (I think) at the old Yankee Stadium -- all cold, one in the snow, one in freezing rain. Lots of non-fans who don't know much about what's going on and leave in the middle of the game even if it's close. Even a NYY loss on Opening Day is less satisfying since they have 161 (or a few less) left to turn it around.

Going to a game on a warm summer day, a breezy summer night, or a fall-in-the-air September day or night in the midst of a pennant race has it all over Opening Day. If I'm going to freeze at OPACY, I'd much rather do it in mid-October than on Opening Day.

As someone that was there and watched that video over 100 times, it was a grand slam.

Funny, that was my initial recollection too, but knowing how well I recollect at times, I checked on bbref first. They show it as a 3 run HR and Davis only having 3 RBI's for the day.

EDIT: As soon as I hit submit, I realized my mistake, we started on the road in 2013....whoops, but I was at the home opener and boy did Davis start on fire that year!

The place was rocking that day!

Yes, yes it was!

Well, yesterday was a pretty good day for me. I asked my wife to set our DVR to record the game, and planned to arrive home at 4 pm and watch on delay so I could skip all the commercials but get caught up by the end. I started to watch, and unfortunately, in the bottom of the first inning the recording suddenly switched to a screen that just had some "MASN 2" graphics up, and as I tried to fast forward through what I assumed were brief network technical difficulties, there appeared to be no end to it. So, I had to go to the live feed, which by that time was in the bottom of the fifth inning. So, I missed about half the game, but got to see the Snider throw home, the Pearce homer, the Pearce scoring play at the plate, Flaherty's homer, and most importantly, the O's walking off the field victorious.

Then I got to watch my Blue Devils win the National Championship. Not a bad two-fer for me, though I'm sure that there weren't many OHers happy about that nightcap. For me, it's a day I will remember for a long time.

I've only been to one Opening Day in my years, and that was 2002. It was an adventure getting down there, it was colder than I'd thought it would be, and there was an aura hanging in the air that this would be the first Opening Day without Cal, or Brady for that matter, in a very long time. Pounding the Yankees into the ground, if for only one game, was an awesome experience, and the team even gave some reason for optimism for a good part of the season. Then the wheels fell off, big time. But hey, it started great.

Last years Opening Day was pretty great, and I didn't even get to see all of it because I was at a conference and missed the beginning of the game to a meeting. But I got back to my hotel room and watched it from maybe the 5th inning onward because it was on ESPN, and was on pins and needles like it was a World Series game. The Cruz jack to break the tie, and then watching the stunned look of disbelief on the faces in the Boston dugout with how it ended gave me a feeling something good could happen this year. Boy did it ever.

    • Maybe he’s throwing shade at somebody who hijacks every game thread.
    • And hader, with the second biggest contract in reliever history, is 19th in average annual value just in current contracts (Diaz is 17th). There are 4 relief pitchers in the top 50 pitchers in annual salary (and that’s if you go by spotrac calling Kyle Hendricks a reliever, which he hasn’t been). Which tells you how mlb values starters vs relievers. If you have a chance to get even a  mid rotation starter, chances are it’s more valuable than very good high leverage relievers. They pitch a ton more innings that impacts the team more.  Relievers are volatile, and don’t exactly have longer shelf lives despite the lower inning workload.    if you get a pitcher with good enough stuff that can be a starter, you can always fall back on them being relievers if they don’t make it as starters. Taking someone with no starter potential limits their upside. That’s not what I want with an early pick. I’ll take all the sharkey types in later rounds, but if I get Brecht, I want him in the minors trying to be a starter as long as they think he can be one.
    • All right I'll pull that back, he does only have a decent shot at his best year. the rest of the season has not happened yet, hell tomorrow could be his last game. I dont like sewing together partial seasons either. Last year half season started with July and August being a scorch fest followed by a cold September which featured shoulder problems and an IL stint. he does have one constant though, the defense is turning Elite. Yes bad AB today, but the more I look at him the more I see what his supporters see. I'm starting to come around to him.
    • Hey everyone! I’m so sorry that I’m late in getting the results accumulated and a winner announced. I haven’t had time to login to the Hangout in probably 10 days or so due to life and work.  I’ll tally up the entries and post the winner this week, hopefully within the next day or two. Thanks for all the interest!
    • I just came here to see if Mateo had gone on the injured list. To be honest, I think he should, because he’s probably not going to play tomorrow if he’s in concussion protocol, simply because nobody’s going to want to take a chance. very disappointing injury. I hope Mullins is OK too, I would be extremely upset if I had accidentally clocked one of my teammates.
    • Sounds good.  Only scored 2 runs (excluding the hr).  Sounds bad.
    • Hey, at least I support the message board financially. 🤷‍♂️
