Manny Machado...

Why get depressed about something that doesn't come up until after the 2018 season? A million things could happen between now and then. But the O's should take a serious run at extending him this offseason.

They should have done it a couple of years ago.

A talent like that you don't wait for him to have his breakout offensive season.

I wonder if he would go for a ten-year type deal if it had a five-year opt out and slightly reduced salaries. Something like:

2016(23) - $10M

2017(24) - $10M

2018(25) - $10M

2019(26) - $15M

2020(27) - $15M

(Opt-out clause)

2021(28) - $17M

2022(29) - $17M

2023(30) - $18M

2024(31) - $18M

2025(32) - $20M

Total - $150M / 10years

He can get out of it if he thinks he can sign for more at his likely MLB prime (going into age 28 season), but he also has protection in case of injury. O's get an annual 5/6 WAR player at $12M AAV for five more years at least.

Maybe this is too low?

Just a guess but if he stays on track he should get something like 5M, 10 M, 15 M, through his arb years and 20M AAV as a FA.

I like Manny in the 2 hole, he is a doubles machine, and if the leadoff guy, can get on base, Manny can drive him to third or home.

If he smacks the occasional HR, then, that's not a bad thing, either.

Same spot where Roberto Alomar used to hit. Someone who actually Manny reminds me of, quite strongly.

I think something must be done in the offseason. A player like him cannot continue to make the league minimum.
