vs. ROYALS, 8/24

Infante is a career .272 hitter. Looking at this year stats is useless. He is a gap hitter. Means you play back not in.

34 years old, slugged .337 last year and .302 this year. Sorry, I'm not buying. 2 seasons in the last 13 with OPS+ over 100.

A dink is acceptable. Getting beat deep is not. Infante is a gap hitter.

When your playing to keep a run off the board, you play for the odds of it being a dink. While I don't agree with Jones playing so shallow, I also can understand the logic with a player like Infante, at the plate.

Look at his doubles and triples. Then talk. He's a gap hitter. Stop defending stupid positioning and ego. Jones had the same issues fielding in 2010 and 2011.

Firstly, you have to figure out if there is a "fault" at all. Is the team gaining defensive outs by playing where he is playing.

You can't rely on selective memory to determine if Jones' position is right, wrong, unlucky, or what.

Plus I have a feeling that having a ball fly over the center fielder's head leaves a more lasting impression on folks than a dink that drops in front. Without looking at data, it is difficult to say if Jones consistently plays out of position. Even with data, it is a difficult question since what you want to know is how many more outs (or less bases given up) would Jones have made if he was positioned differently. You need to clone Jones and do an experiment I think.

The way this whole team is tanking, looking lifeless and deficient in defensive and baserunning fundamentals, would be heading toward a fire-the-manager situation if the manager were someone other than Buck.

Barring something like a 4-28 finish, no one is getting fired just because our weaknesses have all been exposed at once down the stretch. But our team is going to look very different next season, is my guess...

    • In 2023 Mountcastle had a 1.052 OPS vs lefties but a 640 OPS vs righties.     So far in  2024 he has a 958 OPS vs lefties and a 711 OPS vs righties.   It's so early in the season that if  Mounty goes 4 for 4 vs a righty things could look different.     But its worth watching. If the O's need to platoon O'Hearn and Mountcastle  at 1B that opens at bats at DH for  Kjerstad or Mayo. Too soon to know where this is headed but not too soon to consider.
    • That's where I'm at with him too.  If he had a bit more power for a corner or a bit more speed for center, then I'd be a bit more excited.  He is 6'4" and the frame is there to add strength.
    • Gotta start sending these kids to CB Bucknor and Hernandez simulator or make them read Hernandez's art of the strike zone book that all bad umpires consult.
    • Mystery  solved why he was shaking his hand and looking in pain his last two starts.   Roch Kubatko * Kremer had a bandage around his right middle finger yesterday after receiving further treatment for a blister that popped up a couple of starts ago. Though Kremer dominated the Reds Sunday with one hit allowed in six scoreless innings, he could be seen flexing and shaking the hand. Nothing that warranted a mound visit or his removal. No big deal. “It wasn’t going to take me out of the game,” he said. “That was the worst, but it’s manageable,” he said. “It developed the last start. We had to take it down all the way until it was raw skin and kind of build it back up.” Still odd that Ben and Kevin didn’t pick up on this at all during his start.
    • I’m imaging a baseball Sci-fi movie about a time-jumping prospect now.
    • Without the power it really depends on if he’s going to be able to maintain high BABIPs, which is really hard to tell from AA performance. But if he can, the high OBP and plus corner OF defense will make him quite valuable. Probably similar to Cowser but with a 20% K% instead of 30% at the trade off of far less power.
    • I don’t think the age filter shows up in the link, but go to stat filters and set age to <= 19.
