Did anyone else wonder why Gausman was throwing almost all 4 seamers and not 2 seamers tonight? Tampa can hit the straight fastball. It is the one thing they do well. Throw 2 seamers and let them beat it in the ground. Again, it makes no sense to me.

Strikezone size anything running off the plate close has been called a ball.

I think Parra guesses location a lot. When he thinks it is going to inside, he definitely vacates the hips quickly. He can stay through the ball well though.

Schoop swings at a 1-0 pitch at the knees or just below again. Why?

Would you like to bring Parra back?

As CoC has brought up before, his defense is starting to scare me a bit. The metrics aren't wrong. He is getting bad jumps, taking non-optimal routes, and the ball has popped out of his glove at least three times. I'm honestly not sure at this point. I do think he is a pretty good hitter and I like his energy.

I did think he would field better. Hoping it is an issue getting familiar with new parks-excuse making. I do like the fact he gives us a different type of player, he has a different skill set than most of our players.

I agree that the zone was super tight, but I'd just throw 2 seamers down outer third of the zone and trust my stuff. Look at what Roe is doing with his 2 seamer. Gausman's is better than Roe's.

Yes but gausman never got into counts where he could do that. He was behind in the count because of that strikezone.

Kevin will face the Yankees next start. I want to see him finish strong. The zone was small tonight but he wasn't able to get ahead enough or put guys away with 2 strikes.

See the Jake Arrieta thread talking about pitch selection.;;

Ugh looking around, it looks like they've all been deleted or something?!

    • SSS makes we hesitate to agree with you, @Frobby. But the thread idea is thought provoking as most of yours are. Thanks for that! I will say I feel like the depth of the organization is better than last year. With both Means and Bradish looking all healed up, even the SP depth looks rather good. Case in point is the total absence of an OH melt down when Grayson went on the IL.  I think the only aspect of this team that looks like it needs to be fortified at the trade deadline, ( at least as it currently stands on this Cinco de Mayo) is the bullpen. And if Wells and Irwin find themselves there by then, maybe not even there. Mike Elias has the bullets in his gun to make a deadline trade if he needs to. But he might not need to. That's a really powerful place to be!
    • The part I liked most other than the results was that Means was just READY on every pitch. As soon as he got the ball from McCann, it looked like he wanted to throw it right back to him. Great rhythm and confidence. He looked exactly like I’d hoped he would.    I think pitching regularly for a really good team for the first time in his career is going to be great for Means. Last night a great first step.    Burnes/Bradish/Means. It’s at least possible Grayson becomes our FOURTH best pitcher when he returns. Wells was our best pitcher in the first half of ‘22. He might not crack the top 7 anymore. Goodness.
    • Always nice to hear your take. Agree Cowser is faster than Hays... don't think he's as natural a defender, re: lines and glove. I think we're giving up a little, but Cowser isn't an embarrassment by any means. Mullins is of course slowing, and will continue. Might shift to a corner in a year or two if we keep him. Doubt we will. Too much in the pipeline. Hard to argue that Santander isn't a little better. But he's always had a better arm than he got credit for. He looks a little less beefy to me. Wonder if that has improved his range? This is among the best defenses in the league this year and last, so most of the critique is fine detail.
    • They are all young as well: Greene is 24 Abbott is 24 Lodolo is 26 And they have Rhett Lowder on the way.
    • Let's just appreciate for a moment that Kremer isn't on/off the IL all year long. Availability has been his biggest asset.
    • Everyone knows I’m a huge Hays fan, but I think Cowser is considerably faster and covers more ground.  His arm is less consistent, for sure.   Mullins is losing a bit of speed every year.  Sprint speed 27.7 this year to 28.0 last year, 28.5 in 2022.  He’s still a plus defender but covers less ground.   Santander looks better this year than last, I think.
    • @Moose Milligan, to the best of your ability would you define a "dildo post?" It helps we follow the thread better instead of letting my mind wander to places where my browser history might embarrass me.
