Those comments by DD won't help sign Davis. Davis questioned the Orioles commitment when extention talks were going on. Basically, DD said there's money for Davis but no one else. Why bother signing Davis then. And no way will Manny sign a team friendly deal. They need to start looking at packages for Manny.
This is what Roch reported he said :"Duquette said the money offered to Davis could be used instead to acquire other players, though perhaps not all of it this winter." That doesn't sound like the same thing at all. He's looking for LH bats. Suppose he signs Kim for AAV of 3 M, Alvarez AAV of 6 M, and Span AAV of 9 M. That's 18 M not the 21 M AAV for Davis.

Weams post that was quoted in the OP is what weams heard him say.

I'm sorry to say that this would happen.I had hope a couple of players would be

back just to make us even. But hearing all the comments is sad for the fans and

future of this team. DD was lucky with players a couple of years and we won but

the well goes dry at some point. He is a poor GM and probably should have gone to

Toronto.I'm sure Buck is happy with the future of this team. Sorry because I am a

Oriole fan and probably always will be.

Mot to me. Do you expect him to say I guarantee we'll spend it any way no matter what?

No.

I expect him to say that we have a budget and we'll put the best team on the field w/i that budget.

Not, essentially, we have money for Chris Davis, but if we don't sign him we "could" "probably" spend it on somebody else, but not for the length of the contract or the AAV.

Even if we sign Davis we still have atleast one OF and a DH slot to fill plus at least one starting pitcher. What are we planning if we sign Davis?

Spreading out the increase in salaries that the Davis signing represents over 8 years is not allocating those funds. I think we would all expect payrolls to rise that much in 8 years just on normal inflation alone.

I have had a very positive outlook all off-season, and have liked what the team was doing... until now. This is irritating. This basically says that, no we aren't getting any of the Davis money allocated towards other players if Chris doesn't sign, only saying in a way that tries to sound like a yes. Who are they kidding?

I mentioned him earlier this week in one of the Davis threads, but Jim Duquette was the one guy saying every day on his XM Radio show if Peter doesn't get Davis, that big money will not go toward another big-name player. And we all know Jim can speak from experience when it comes to dealing with Angelos.

No, I'm not Jim nor am I related to him. Just found it interesting when callers or other show hosts like Jim Bowden tried to tie Upton to the Orioles, Duquette was the one guy warning everyone no Davis means Peter will put the money back in his pocket.

Who knows, maybe Jim D. will end up being wrong. Lots of time left in the offseason and Upton is still out there.

If we sign Davis, Trumbo is the DH. With both of them in the middle of a lineup that also includes Machado, Jones, Schoop, Wieters, and (hopefully) a healthy Hardy, the emphasis on the outfield could be a speed guy who gets on base and plays good defense, with Reimold filling the other spot. As for the pitcher, who knows? Maybe a bounceback guy like Fister or an old guy like Colon or maybe a trade.

I trust both, but I strongly doubt that weams would make up the comment about the 8 years. It looks to me like weams' version is an exact quote, while Roch's looks more like a synopsis. No?

He answered the same question later with slightly different language. I am sure Dan will spend what he wants to. He never said that ownership said he could not spend. In fact. He indicated strongly the other way. He did indicate that all the money offered to Davis would not be spent in one place. Or in one year.
