An entirely dirt infield is hoped by many to be the first step toward having a natural grass surface in Toronto. Since the park opened, only small areas -- a few square feet around the bases -- are dirt. Even the only fully domed stadium still in use in the majors, Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., uses an all-dirt infield. Rogers Centre is something of a throwback to the 1970s and 1980s, when domed stadiums such as the Kingdome in Seattle and the Astrodome in Houston had infields with artificial base paths.

Shapiro starts his real job.
