Joe Orsulak: Putting Dylan Bundy In Orioles' Rotation Would Risk His Future (He's starting anyway)

I like the idea of him piggy backing one of the starters (I think Wilson was mentioned before). If you could get 4 innings from Wilson and 3 from Bundy every 5th day, then that would be great. The problem with that though is that we still need another starter to give us consistent innings and right now, we don't have one.

Yeah - all cases are unique but look at Matt Harvey. Coming off TJ last year and the Mets worked him pretty hard (216 innings pitched). Career may be done.

Harvey and Bundy both had their TJ's about the same time - 2013. Harvey pitched 216 inning in 2015. As a starter, we would be asking about 100 innings from Bundy in 2016.

I'm not sure how the two cases are close to comparable.

Bundy had additional injuries that delayed his return to pitching.

Harvey went over the recommended 180+ innings and might be career over.

They may not be comparable, but if anything it makes sense to be more careful with Bundy than Harvey, as he had additional injuries and setbacks post TJ.

I don't think Orsulak has any more knowledge of the medical side of this than you or I. I'm sure the Orioles will be cautious and will be consulting the team doctors and perhaps outside doctors as well every step of the way. I'm not sure I agree that the O's won't let Bundy go beyond 75-80 pitches, though. That's not the sense I've gotten from Dan and Buck.

DD pretty much said as much this past Sunday with Melewski, that he is inclined if Dylan feels healthy and wants to keep pitching, to let him throw.

Harvey also made 20 starts of at least 97 pitches last season. Even if Bundy went into the rotation, he would most likely be looking at about a 75 pitch max - another major difference in the two cases. We are going to have to take the training wheels off and stretch him out at some point. This seems like a great opportunity to do so. Help the club this season, help his rehab and help get him ready for a starting role next season.

They aren't in the least bit, but everyone who thinks like Orsulak needs something to latch onto so......

Don't really care.

You gotta put him in the rotation after the AS break, come what may. Wanna win a World Series? Wanna keep your top prospects but add a 97 mph arm to the rotation? It's the only option, then, and it will happen immediately following the break. They'll still keep his innings low and piggy back him with Worley as much as possible.

But, this 97 MPH arm, could turn into the next Kershaw for 10-15 years, isn't that more valuable than one 1 WS?

    • JD Martinez would be a more of the same kind of acquisition. He is not an impact bat and he is a periphery (around the margins) piece at this point. Why not set the bar higher and sign Alonso? Acquiring Pete Alonso allows you to move on from Mountcastle and put Mayo (where he belongs right now) DH. It also allows you to move on from O'Hearn.  Alonso gets everyday ABs and Mayo does. Those two things to a large degree help solve the lineup imbalance against LHP. I know Alonso will cost real money. But again who are we paying? The money is there. It's time to start using it (if we want to win in October).
    • Your full quote said to use him as a DH for 100+ games. If you are worried about him being covered through his injuries - how can you assume he wouldn't be injured at the end of the season, going into the playoffs?
    • Here’s an exercise… it’s the postseason and the bases are loaded. The Santa scenario. Who on our current roster would you rather have up over JD Martinez?  Same fact pattern as Santander’s AB.
    • I think the title of this thread told you his status
    • Why did you pare down my quote about it being for the post season and not just 162?  People, always so quick to clown someone. Lmao. Damn. At least use my whole quote bro.  If you think that we don’t need at least one proven playoff bat then that’s ok. My point is, that we have enough 1B/DH options to carry JD through his ups/downs/injuries over 162 for his experience, leadership, and playoff experience.  You can disagree, but quote me right.
    • It's kind of amazing to me how no one knows Suarez's free agent status. I've heard it both ways. He's Schrodinger's baseball player.
    • Since JD Martinez has a career OPS of .950 in the postseason across 12 series and 151 plate appearances, I am sure our FO will have no use for him.  A veteran player who has experienced a lot of postseason success rarely helps young teams get to that next level.
