  1. 1. Are you in favor of the Pearce for Heim trade?

    • Yes. Pearce can help us.
    • No. Too much to give up for a rental who will play part time.

Actually, I was indeed anticipating the Orioles' turnaround it as far back as 2008.

I was not posting here at the time, but I was posting at the Baltimore Sun, and expressing the reasons for my optimism ...... partially because of the players that the Orioles had in the highest level of the minors, and partially because of Andy MacPhail having been hired on as the Orioles' G.M. the previous season.

Prior to the 2009 season, I expected the Orioles to have a competitive, winning season in 2010, and to contend for a pennant in 2011. The Orioles did it all in one shot in 2012, so I was off by 2 years on the winning season, and I was off by one year on the Orioles contending for a pennant. In fact, when I called Nestor Aparicio at his sports radio show the time (before I knew what a jerk he was), he thought that I was crazy.

And I had previously referenced one of the reasons why I thought so in a thread that I started in June of 2012, which alluded to my thinking in late 2008, and early 2009.

OFFNY's Original Big Ten from 2009

One of your ten became a good major league starter for the Orioles. You could say the O's recent successes have come despite the pitchers on your list.

There were other reasons why I stated my reason for the optimism (such as position players and Andy MacPhail having been hired as the Orioles' GM in 2007.)

Also, Zach Britton becoming arguably the best closer in the game to me is almost as significant as Chris Tillman becoming a solid starter, especially considering how today's game relies so much more on relief pitching than it did 30-40 years ago, and more.

More significantly, I was answering the previous poster's question, which was the fact that I was indeed optimistic and expectant of the Orioles to turn things around in the relatively near future back in 2008 and 2009.

He's been a 2-win player in 60 games. But his career rate is 2.1 wins per 500 PAs, so he's probably going to be worth half a win over the 30-odd games he'll play from here on out. You can't just take a niche player whose playing time and role has been set up for him to succeed and extrapolate that over a full season.

Brother Lo wasn't a 7-8 win player in '82 because he was a 4-win player in 380 PAs.

Extrapolation tells us nothing.

Pearce can go on epic tears with an OPS over 1.0. That can carry a team down the stretch or in a playoff series.

Worth a shot.

And he is generally effective when used properly anyhow.

I was optimistic about our team many times, including at the outset of the 2010 and 2011 seasons. I was wrong about both of those. I was much more pessimistic about 2012; I was wrong again. I was overly optimistic in 2013 and 2015, and not optimistic enough in 2014.

We had a nice crop of players debut in 2009. Our farm system probably was at its apex going into that season, in terms of depth of quality prospects.

I don't see how anyone could be against this trade. We obtained a guy who gives us a small upgrade in the outfield and can hit lefties. To do this, we gave up one of our several Catchers in the pipeline.. and one who is unlikely to ever contribute in the majors. I mean, Catchers aren't always going to be the best hitters, but I would expect a little more than sub .650 OPS in Frederick. This was a trade that benefits the major league club slightly without damaging any future returns.

It's astounding that some people have a problem with this trade. We're trying to win the World Series this year, and Steve Pearce gives us a versatile excellent bat off the bench. And all we had to give up was a nobody catcher who will likely never get called up to the Majors. Some people aren't too bright.

In 2012 there were some fairly over-the-top posts about giving up another Heim-like player in Gabriel Lino along with Kyle Simon for Jim Thome. Like this:

I moved to the Pittsburgh area this year, and I think this trade may put me over the edge. Screw the Orioles, I'm going to be a Pirates fan. I can't possibly imagine that any team is more bereft of a long term plan for success than the Orioles. How can Duquette look at this team in good conscience and think that it is wise to trade the future for the infinitesimally small chance that the O's make the playoffs this year.

I think this is the straw that breaks the camel's back for me. The O's are destined for another solid 5 years of losing, maybe longer. If this is the best that the mind's at the helm can come up with, then it is obvious that they are either A) Too Dumb or B) Too motivated by the appearance of propriety in attempting to "compete" -- see your standard politician.

What does this last sentence add to the discussion? There are valid reasons to dislike the trade, just as there are valid reasons to like it.

I'm curious what the collective WAR and salary is for players Duquette acquired before the trade deadline.

I really liked this Pearce trade...*if* he was healthy.

I didn't care for it but I wasn't upset about it.

I figured Pearce would regress to his career norms and I didn't like giving up a glove first catcher. I think those guys have value even if they never make the majors.
