Thanks, so only a little under 60 million committed to 2018. And our team consists of:

Davis, Jones, Possibly Hardy, Machado, Britton, Possibly Miley, O'day, Castillo, Schoop, Bundy, Brach, Joseph, MacFarland, Verrett, Given, Wilson, Wright, Rickard, Aquino, Bridwell, Drake, Garcia, Gunkel, Hart, Lee, Liranzo, Mancini, Pena, Santander, Tavarez, A. Walker and C. Walker.

Wow! We need some starting pitching!

If the team doesn't look to be in a strong competitive position, I suspect some of that pitching would come through trades of our veteran players, particularly Machado.

I'm thinking we could actually have luxury tax constraints in 2018.   The 2018 threshold is $197 mm.

Davis $23 mm

Schoop $6.5 mm

Manny $19 mm

Castillo $7 mm (player option)

Jones $17 mm

Trumbo $12.5 mm

Gausman $7 mm

Britton $17 mm

O'Day $9 mm

Brach $5.5 mm

Bundy $.5 mm

Givens $.5 mm

That's $124.5 mm for 12 core players.   Then you have two players with team options.   Hardy's is $14 mm with a $2 mm buyout.  Miley's is $12 mm with a $500 k buyout.    Assuming we don't exercise them, we're then at $127 mm and have to replace (or re-sign):

- Tillman

- Jimenez

- Miley

- Hardy

- Kim

- Smith

And decide whether we want to keep or replace 3 more marginal guys - Flaherty, Joseph, and McFarland.

That's a fair amount to do for $70 mm.    Now assume Hardy and Miley have good years and we want to keep them -- then we'd have $46.5 mm to fill two rotation spots and two corner OF spots plus dole out small salaries in several other spots.

It can all be done, but it's surprising how close to the tax threshold we might come.

Minor quibble, Bundy will be making more than the minimum due to the ML contract he signed.

Not necessarily. Bundy's ML contract expired at the end of the 2016 season. The Orioles are within their rights to renew his contract at whatever number they see fit until he is eligible for arbitration. Similar to the Guthrie situation.

Not true.  Like the Guthrie situation there is a limit to how much he can be cut in one year.

There is something going on with Bundy's contract that I don't think we understand.  His 2016 salary of 1.8m was an option.  Why did that O's pick up the option last year if they could have refused it and signed him for less.   There may not be able to decrease it this year for some reason we do not know.

  • 5 years/$6.225M (2011-15), plus 2016 option
    • signed Major League contract with Baltimore 8/16/11
    • $4M signing bonus
    • 16:$1.8M

3) Jones 17m - CF

4) Tillman 17m  - SP1

5) Trumbo 12.5m  - DH

6) Miley 12m - SP2

7) O'Day 9m - RP1

8) Schoop 8m - 2B

9) Hardy 7m - SS

10) Castillo 7m - C

11) Gausman 6m - SP3

12) Brach 5m - RP2

13) Flaherty  2m - UIF

14) Bundy 1.8m - SP4

15) Rickard .5m - RF

16) Givens .5m - RP3

17) Hart .5m - RP4

18) Wright .5m - SP5

19) Sisco .5m - C

20) Tavarez ,5m - LF

21) Drake .5m  - RP5

22) Wilson or Verrett .5m - RP6

23) Liranzo .5m - RP7

24) Santander .5m - OF

25) TBD .5m - OF

Total 2018 Payroll 162.8M

Does the J J Hardy Figure have his $2 Million buy out in it or is that an added expense???

Bundy will get less than $1 Million as he is not Arb Eligible until 2019.

A lot depends on what kind of season Hardy has.

We will see how much Bundy gets this year.

I don't see them cutting Bundy's salary.

Dylan Bundy had a base salary of $445,000 with a signing bonus of $4 Million spread over 5 years($800,000 Per Yr.) plus the 2016 option of $1.8 Million.  I had mis-spoke about his ability to get over the Million threshold.  The Orioles can however renew that deal until he is arbitration eligible with no increase but added incentives/goals that can trigger a higher AAV. So NO they won't cut his salary but could FREEZE it.

I'm on board with that line of thinking.
