I could see myself going to a game in person for the first time in a couple seasons, after they release Chris Davis of course.

Wait till after June 1st when Hays and Diaz are on this team. I could see us being a lot like those pesky Twins teams a few years ago that always gave out “contending” teams fits.

Didn't the O's set the all time record for least triples, I believe it was 5 or 6?

In 1986 the Orioles hit two triples at home.  All year.  Both Memorial Stadium (at least after the early hedgerow years) and OPACY have been terrible places to hit triples.  By my count the Orioles have had 32 years where they've hit fewer than 10 triples at home.

The other side of that coin is the 1894 NL Orioles hit 150 triples in just 129 games.  Which is still the single season team record.  The last time a team hit even 100 triples in a season was 1932, when the Senators did it.

Back then, most parks were also massive.

When I think of slow Orioles, I think of Wieters. Looked like he was carrying two buckets full of milk around the bases.

Yeah I agree and to me Markakis in the outfield always looked like he was running in sand.

  • 1 year later...

I had Hays at about 15.7 tonight on his inside the park job.    He kind of let up as he approached 1B, turned on the jets when the ball got past the CF, and let up again about 20 feet from home plate when it became clear he wouldn’t draw a throw.

Odd coincidence and quality bump.

Welp, Diaz hasn't made his entry into O's lore yet but Hays just garnered a place in our hearts.  We are definitely "pesky" as this 2020 SSS suggests.  And @Frobby, how about that steal of home attempt?

I really want someone to build a ballpark where a player can hit an inside-the-park home run that doesn't involve someone making a mistake.  Hayes gets credit for a homer last night, but if the Phils' CF isn't so aggressive it's a single.  You could describe it as a single with a three-base judgment error.  And the official scorer was nice when he didn't say anything about the bobbled cutoff and no-throw, without which there at least would have been a pretty close play at the plate.

With parks no deeper than about 425 or 430 at any point I'm not sure Usain Bolt could circle the bases fast enough to get an inside-the-parker on a ball that just flies over an outfielder's head.

I don’t think the bobble would have mattered that much.  He went in standing up.

The idea of it being a single and 3 base error is interesting though.  If the CFer makes the catch, we talk about what a great catch it would have been.  But if he misses it, it’s an error in judgment and therefore Hays should get penalized for it.

Tough call there.  I tend to give the benefit of the doubt to the hitter there.  He hit that ball almost 107MPH and while it was a poor decision for the CFer to make, he didn’t touch it and Hays just ran hard.

    • I’m not ready to concede that Mayo needs to be lifted for defense.
    • Bradfield -  C- .  Needs a big second half. Horvath - C.  Needs a good second half. Baumeister - C.  Walks are a big problem. Josenberger - C+.  For the 3rd round at least he’s interesting.   Levi Wells - D.  Showed glimpses but getting knocked around way too much. Matthew Etzel - A.  Couldn’t ask for much better from a 10th round pick. Good news -  He looks like the best player from this draft Bad news - He looks like the best player from this draft. The O’s went for speed and athletes so there’s still a chance some of these guys figure it out.  So far, not so good.   Interesting arms. Nestor German Teddy Sharkey (TJ surgery) Kiefer Lord (TJ surgery)
    • That above scenario is the only reason I could see us keeping Urias right now. Would we want to lose a close playoff game because we pinch hit for Mateo to tie a game/get the lead, but lose the game because Mayo isn’t the defender Urias is.  We have options after we trade Urias, 1. Just simply have Holliday on the playoff roster. If Mateo is pinch hit for, then Holliday just comes in at 2B. 1-1 substitution keeping Westburg at 3B. 2. We make a small trade for a defensive wiz that can play 3B and stash him on our roster and make sure he’s playoff eligible.  Either way, this is a likely scenario in the playoffs, but it’s fixable. Get Mayo up here.
    • Etzel is carrying the class in terms of early production. He’s already in AA Bowie. He’s not a little guy either for a CF, which you would think with him being a 10th rd pick. He’s 6’2” 200.  EBJ I feel like is going to frustrate us because he might be the Jorge Mateo of CF.  Casual fans don’t like that, but our lineup is poised to carry a GG level CF with elite base stealing/base running.  I’ll lump Josenberger and Vasquez together at the moment. Both are guys with 30+ SB, but in that .670 OPS range in A+ Aberdeen. Again, just like EBJ, can they get that OPS up enough to be playable offensively. I do not know about their defense. Can Josenberger play CF  in pro ball?  How does Vasquez look at SS? Urman and Cunningham are struggling. Horvath hit just .199 in April and May.  He got off to a slow start and hit the IL for a bit. He’s really come on recently.     Thoughts?
    • I guess it comes down to how much they like him and if they can agree on a dollar figure.  Someone said he was going to be in the mlb draft league but I didn’t see him listed on any rosters.
    • FIP doesn’t suggest anything.
    • No matter what?    Lol Yeah, he could start against LHP.
