Mancini Trade Package

They might be fine just moving Happ to the OF. With Rizzo, Bryant, Schwarber, and Baez it seems like already have plenty of pop. If they are interested in Mancini, I would think that Brailyn Marquez might be the high level guy that we're interested in the most. Hard throwing lefthander who can hit triple digits and is only 21 years old.

We'll just have to see what happens with Castellanos.  If teams are going bonkers for him in FA, then I think that's a direct correlation to what Mancini's trade value is.  Mancini is different than Givens.  Mancini might have more value at the deadline versus now, because teams might be more inclined to roll with what they have and then re-evaluate come deadline time.

And not so good. Didn't make the 2019 playoff roster.

Voit was battling a sports hernia and had surgery in October for it. I think that's why he slumped a bit at the end of the year. I don't think the Yankees would view Mancini as an upgrade over him. Their counting stats were somewhat similar, but Voit had a .381 OBP which is elite for a first baseman.

I think the shine has work off of Castellanos. In the juiced ball era his numbers just don't jump off the page anymore and he's a poor defender. I guess time will tell though...

Using the bb-ref neutralized stats converter, Mancini's 2019 numbers in a '19 Coors context is equivalent to .331/.408/.612, 1.020 OPS, 145 runs, 211 hits, 46 doubles, 43 homers, and 132 RBI.  And the same OPS+ and WAR as he really had.

Yet most other metrics that individualize just HRs. Don't see much of a difference between Camden and Coors right handed hitters. The difference is in doubles, triples, strikeout rate and batting average. He would objectively would put up better numbers. Just wouldn't expect an automatic growth in HRs.

If you gave me a 40 HR over/under. I would bet on the under.

I don't get it, but I'm rooting for Giants Castellanos to maximize Mancini's market (not that I'm clamoring for a deal - just for the sake of options).  I can imagine White Sox, Rangers, Cubs, Reds, Diamondbacks fits as:

CWS - unseating Leury Garcia in LF.  Would make a fun lineup once 2B Madrigal, CF Robert, DH Vaughn all happen by...Memorial Day?

TEX - unseating Danny Santana/Ronald Guzman at 1B.  Rangers demand might wobble depending on if Rendon takes all their money; if not they'll have plenty of cash for ordinary free agents.

CHC - taking RF and unseating Happ via Heyward RF --> CF

CIN - taking LF/RF and unseating whoever of Winker/Aquino Cincinnati trusts less.  Yesterday 12/9 was the anniversary of the Frank trade.

ARZ - taking 1B/RF and unseating whoever of Walker/Rojas Arizona trusts less.

Which if any of Ian Happ, Jesse Winker, Aristides Aquino, Christian Walker or Josh Rojas might Elias consider straight up?

The Givens market probably needs Treinen, Betances and Will Harris to clear before getting to the argument of do you want him or World Series hero Daniel Hudson.

None. They're all too old. I imagine Elias will target younger, lower level prospects. I also think Texas and Cincy might be stretches for landing spots. I said it before, but I think the White Sox are by far the best fit. And the timing seems to right on their end because all the moves they've made seem to indicate they're trying to contend this season.

He was still recovering from surgery. I know if I'm Cashman I'd rather just run Voit out there than give up anything valuable for Mancini.

I think that’s probably right, even though I prefer Mancini to Voit.

Voit was a 22nd round draft pick.    Gotta feel good for guys like that who succeed.    Just wish it wasn’t for the Yankees.

Not only that but a 22nd round pick as a catcher who had a bad arm and hadn't hit all that well in college.

    • It's fine for GRod to get a spot on the All-Star  team. I hope he doesn't warm up or pitch.
    • 1. From the beginning of time until roughly 1980 an average MLB game was somewhere between 1:50 and 2:30, all shorter than today's games with the pitch clock. It's not primarily the pitch clock. 2. Even if the pitch clock were to be shown to increase injuries by some some amount, do we really want to go back to a game where the average time is 3+ hours and increasing every year? The glacial pace of pre-clock baseball was killing interest in the sport. MLB had become a recurring meme online because it was sooooo slloooooowwww. I'll take 10% or 20% more injuries if it means we get a game that's played at a reasonable pace and gametimes in line with the other major sports that play multiple times a week.
    • I was joking.  Always make for a good laugh anytime Elias picks somebody up off the scrap heap.  I actually agree with you though, his numbers at times are pretty decent.  Not a bad depth piece, especially if we pull ahead of the Yankees and need someone to eat some innings late in the season.
    • Definitely agree on Gunnar swing timing — kinda looked like Cowser last night where late on FB and ahead of offspeed/breaking balls.  Was the same on Sunday too. Re: Kjerstad and high cheese. Keep in mind that Kirby has 99th percentile values for his fastball (and also per baseball savant, mostly locates it up in the zone).  It’s probably the best fastball in the game right now for SPs (edit, just looked it up, and only guy I see at 100 pitch value for FB is Crochet).
    • Like I said the other day, it would be nice to hear from some scouts, the org or whoever about all the walks, lack of power, lack of BA, etc…is he tweaking things? Is the elbow bothering him to where he can’t drive the ball? Is he getting nothing to hit?     I’m surprised someone from the Banner hasn’t gotten into this because it’s obviously a big story and one that should be reported on.
    • One thing to note is that Jackson made swing tweaks his first three weeks back in Norfolk but then abandoned them because they “didn’t feel great”. From this Baltimore Banner article:  “Earlier, as he fiddled, Holliday felt he was “surviving” and “didn’t feel great” about where his swing was, even though he produced at the Triple-A level upon his return. That has since changed. Over the last two weeks, particularly, Holliday’s return to the mechanics he’s more familiar with has helped him get back on track.” His contact rate really dropped off when he reverted back to his familiar mechanics. I worry that he gave up on the changes too soon. First three weeks back vs. after (includes tracked pitches and non-bunts)   PAs    K%           wOBA  xwOBA whiff % 4/27-5/18 91 19.8% .366 .349 21.6% 5/19-7/2 118 28.8% .392 .337 32.1%     PAs    EV      hard hit % barrel/PA 4/27-5/18 91 89.5 44.4% 4.4% 5/19-7/2 118 89.8 44.6% 4.2%
    • Sure. And his ligaments would have likely snapped, and he'd have put that college degree to good use instead of being a ballplayer. Or he would have thrown at 90% like most everyone else and topped out with Cedar Rapids in the Three-I League.
