Playing as a scab might be the only way Chris Davis could ever hit over .200 again.

Hyde seems to have found another simpler method: playing Davis only against right-handed pitchers. So far in 178 AB the slash line is .208/.294/.365/.659, including all 7 homers and 7 doubles. Caveat: Last year the slash line was .178/.255/.302/.557 in 338 AB.

32 games until rosters expand for September. Beginning next year there will be 26 players on the active roster. Davis will be around until one of the following happens:

  • He suffers a career-ending injury (not being able to hit doesn't count)
  • He gets tired of the state of things and retires (maybe decides to devote his life to doing something he considers more worthwhile)
  • His place on the 40-man roster is needed for a prospect with real talent
  • He becomes a negative influence in the clubhouse and they need to get rid of him
  • The O's become contenders and need his spot on the active roster for someone who can contribute consistently
  • He suffers a personal crisis that makes it impossible for him to function as a ballplayer (like, his wife runs away with a door-to-door carpet cleaning guy and he has to take care of the kids)

For me, the 40 man thing is not a huge deal, it's the appearance in the lineup over and over again. Mancini needs to be at 1B and not in the OF. We then need to clear the way for the young guys in the OF. Then at some point Mountcastle will be coming up.  Where do we put him on the field? Davis on the bench subbing in and playing minimally would be fine for me right now.

To use a "political term" - can we lock it up (this thread) now!  Well done mdb!
