Connolly: Hobgood and Jordan

Jordan's pick wasn't defensible then and it sure as hell isn't defensible now. Good on him to own up to it and not make excuses.

Never had an issue with Hobgood, the person. Always had an issue with Hobgood, the pick. What a blunder.

Also, The Athletic is worth the money.

And I wish people would read this and stop saying Angelos was cheap:

“Mr. (Peter) Angelos gave me the money that I needed to sign the players that I wanted to sign. He did that for seven years. So, I can’t point the needle in that direction,” Jordan said. “No, it didn’t have anything to do with money.”

He even coughed up 800K late to sign Givens.

At the time he was here, I thought Jordan did a good job. In hindsight, that was because the guys before him were historically bad. Now I think he did mostly a poor job. Always liked the guy but, short of the no brainers, he didn't have a lot of guys that he found in later rounds.

Here's a stat for you. On the three Orioles playoff teams, there were a total of seven picks by Jordan who made the roster on those playoff teams. That's Britton, Wieters, Matusz, Caleb Joseph, Givens, Manny, and Bundy. Those Orioles teams made the playoffs in spite of their terrible drafting not because of it.

This seems like incomplete logic to me. First, the 2012 team included Roberts, Arrietta, Markakis, Jim Johnson, Reimold and some others that were drafted before Jordan, so you can hardly fault him for that.

Second, and I certainly don’t have the energy to look this up, but Jordan having 7 players on a playoff bound team in 7 years of drafting seems like it’s probably on par with other scouting directors around the league.

How about this? The Cincinnati Reds had 17 different players who were drafted by their organization on their three playoff teams from 2010-2013. And that’s just one example.

Excellent article about Hobgood in the Athletic!  I saw his second game as a pro at Bluefield and he did not go over 90 the entire 5 innings he pitched and I thought right then...”This is not good”.

Beautiful place to watch a game.

How about this? I can count an easy 3 in Joseph, Gausman and Mancini that made playoff rosters and can make an easy argument for including Schoop or Chen. Just the 3 brings it to 15.

It’s also worthwhile to count guys that were traded to bring players that made the playoffs a possibility such as Hader for Norris.

Drafting isn’t as 1:1 as you make it seem.
