Isn’t Cozart a good example of why it wasn’t smart to pay Villar $10 million?

He is a good example of why it might not make sense to sign Villar to a 3/$38M deal, not a 1/$10M deal. Cozart was entering his age 32 season when he signed that deal and he had consistently been a 2 WAR player in the 4 years before his really good age 31 season. Villar is only entering his age 29 season.

Not at all.  Cozart is a bad multi year contract that was hamstringing his teams ability to make another bad signing.  I would contend that holding Villar for the chance at acquiring a prospect who could accumulate even 2 bWAR is worth it.

To be completely cynical I doubt the $10 million going into the owners pocket is going to give us that return on investment.  To be less cynical I doubt that $ going back into player development is going to return that investment.  Maybe if it goes into the draft.

We got a prospect for him though. Would paying him $5 million for a half season be worth some perceived chance at a better prospect?

It depends on how many $5 million units Orioles' ownership have earmarked for gambling.

Question about how they calculate the luxury tax.  I know they don’t factor in deferments and take the yearly average.  But how does the following work?  Howie Kendrick signed a two year/10.5M deal.  But the second is a team option.  His first year is 4M, his second is 6.5M. They owe him $2.5M if they don’t exercise the option.  So he’s guaranteed $6.5M.  What is his number for luxury tax purposes?  I know you weren’t expecting math, but is it $6.5M or $5.25M or $4M?

...looks like we all might need to lower our trade expectations for Mancini. Salaries are almost identical and Mancini’s under contract for an extra year, but Mazara is three years younger.

White Sox acquired OF Nomar Mazara from the Rangers for OF Steele Walker.

This swap was agreed to late Tuesday night at the Winter Meetings in San Diego and has been made official following the necessary medical record review. Mazara posted a mostly underwhelming .268/.318/.469 batting line with 19 home runs and 66 RBI over 116 games for Texas in 2019 and has yet to hit more than 20 home runs in a major league season, but he is just 24 years old and could maybe blossom with a change of scenery. He also drew reported trade interest from the Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Marlins, and Tigers.

Sure it might take away a landing spot, but I still think Mancini is more closely tied with Castellanos. It just depends if there enough of a market. I like the idea of potentially having the best available bat and relief arm come trade deadline time.

I disagree with the comp here. Mazara has mostly plateaued as a player, maybe even regressed.  Mancini has arguably not reached his ceiling yet given his stat progression.

So Mazara has plateaued at the age of 24 and Mancini has not at the age of 27 (soon to be 28)? That might be your belief, but I'm willing to bet that the White Sox are banking on the younger player having the potential for more upside. Mancini might be better offensively (right now), but I think Mazara's youth closes the value gap between the two quite a bit. Maybe the Orioles can get a bit more for Mancini, but if this is any gauge it's definitely not going to be a considerable haul unless a team is desperate.

You don't think Mancini was made available before the trade deadline last season? Because I sure think he was. Agree with the Castellanos comparison, but it's not quite apples to apples because one is a free agent and one would need to be traded for. The Mazara comp isn't perfect, but I think it's probably as close as we're going to get.

I don’t think this is much of a gauge at all.    Mazara’s youth isn’t much of a factor since he’s only under team control for two more years.     It’s highly unlikely that he’ll improve enough in the next two years to be as good as Mancini over that period, plus as you noted Mancini is under control for an additional year.    Mancini's WAR last year was almost double Mazara’s WAR for his entire career.

I don’t think Mancini would bring a giant haul in a trade, but Mazara is no measure of that IMO.
