OPACY New Home of the Jays? Update (No. It is Buffalo.)

I think the last regular season major league game played in Buffalo was the second game of a doubleheader between the Federal League Buffalo Blues and the Baltimore Terrapins on September 9th, 1915.  Jack Quinn was the Terps' starter, he's the guy who pitched until he was 49 years old, kind of the Jamie Moyer of the 1910-30 era.  The Blues featured the sinister and devious Hal Chase.

Before that Buffalo had various major league teams in the 1800s, the last being the Bisons of the short-lived Players League in 1890.  They went 36-96 despite featuring two HOF catchers: Connie Mack behind the plate, and Deacon White.  Mack of course made the Hall for his managerial career more than catching, and White was usually a catcher but by '90 he was 42 and split time between first and third.

Buffalo guy here. Been to the park many times, decent facility, if somewhat aged. Originally built to be able to be upgraded with a second deck if Buffalo had been able to land an MLB expansion team in the 80s, which they nearly did.

Not a lot of loyalty to the Blue Jays in Buffalo, as it is a relatively new relationship (2013). The cities are geographically close- less than a 2 hour drive in normal times when you could cross the border. Some acrimony lingers between the cities sports-wise after much speculation that the Bills were going to be moved to Toronto, which thankfully never happened. Of course without fans this is pretty irrelevant.

Any downgrade in lighting or clubhouse luxuries is balanced by the fact Sahlen Field is an actual baseball park, unlike Rogers Centre which is more of a "spectacle" and that is putting it nicely.

Good.  It will be fun to have a new ballpark to look at on TV, since the Os don't go to Texas this year to play in the Giant Smoker.

If you’ve seen The Natural, you’ve seen Buffalo’s stadium.    And I guess the penultimate scene in that movie explains why the Blue Jays need to work on the lighting there!

Rick, that was actually Buffalo's old stadium (War Memorial.)

It was known as "The Rockpile", and the Bills played their from 1960 through 1972 before Rich Stadium was built for them and opened in 1973. Most of The Natural was filmed there in 1983.

The current stadium (Pilot Filed) that is used by the AAA-Bisons did not open until 1988.

Thanks, that’s good to know!    Kind of ruined my joke about the lights, though.
