This is a very interesting topic and I wish I paid closer attention. It seems that with pitching being in such demand, teams will be falling all over themselves to make picks in the rule five draft, so I bet that any pitcher we expose will be selected. Justin Slaten has been excellent with Boston, so gems can certainly be found there. -
I think there is almost 100% consensus on the board that the O’s will need more pitching to win the AL East and make a deep playoff run. So, I don’t think you’re breaking new ground here. The real question is, how much should the O’s be willing to give up to acquire the pitching they need? You’ve given your answer: you’d be okay trading Holliday, Kjerstad and another decent prospect from AA. Personally, I won’t reject that out of hand. It really depends on the quality of the pitchers received in return and the length of time under team control. Who do you have in mind? -
And yet we have the 4th best team ERA in the majors. Yes, we absolutely need to pick up some pitching at the deadline. The weaknesses are well known, and the one that will hurt the most in the postseason is not having enough lights out high-K-rate relievers. But the idea that we are really suffering in pitching is just not true. Most teams in the majors are worse than we are, and that includes most of the playoff teams. -

Even with just Santander it is hard to play Kjerstad and Cowser together. Then adding Hays makes it even more difficult. Coming into the year, Hays was coming off perhaps his best season while playing solid defense. Any other team he would be getting a longer leash. -
If I had a nickel for every time I heard that a kid "should stick at SS" from US and overseas evaluators, I could have retired by now! lol I always take that stuff with several a grains of salt. What I listen for though are the ones that they don't say that about. They definitely are 2B at best or will need to move to the outfield. I just hope they have size or speed to make up for it or they're just tweeners. Of course as I know you know, the vast majority of these guys are going to fail, even the bonus babies. Just got to hit in a Basallo once in awhile and get one or two other decent guys a year that stay interesting at the upper levels to stay pertinent. -
