Bundy trade looking better

I remember when the Bundy trade was announced being upset that the O's didn't get a top 100 prospect.  4 marginal prospects instead of 1 much better prospect seemed a poor return.  With the lost 2020 minor league season there was no way to judge the trade.  Bundy looks to be the same Bundy that made O's fans want to pull their hair out and the O's return for him is looking better.  The pitchers the O's acquired were Kyle Bradish, Isaac Mattson, Zach, Peek, and Kyle Brnovich.  Only Kyle Bradish was a ranked prospect for the Angels, at an unimpressive #21.

The results this season have been impressive, at least for Bradish and Brnovich.  Bradish is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 26 K's in 13.2 innings.  Brnovich is 2-0 with a 1.15 ERA and 17 K's in 15.2 innings, and a microscopic 0.32 WHIP.   Zach Peek is 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA and 15 K's in 11 innings.   Mattson is -0-1 with an 11.57 ERA.  He was called up recently when the O's needed a pitcher w/ an arm.  Getting a couple of contributing pitchers for the Major League team would make this trade a huge win.  It will be interesting to track these players throughout the season and compare them to how Bundy is doing.  It's still early in Elias's hopefully long and successful tenure, but this trade is looking like it was a good one.

Iglesias for Garrett Stallings

Elias traded away 3 players for 5ish top 30 organizational prospects. I’d say we came out on top. Elias has shown a knack for improving our top 30+ talent. Heck, the Dorian for Yefry Ramirez trade is looking alright.

Bradish is a starter at AA and I’d say will move to AAA before long if this keeps up.    I was expecting him to be very good based on comments Matt Blood and others made last year about his work at the alternate site.    

Brnovich is a starter at A+.   I hadn’t heard any hype about him so I’m excited about what he’s done.   He could move to AA if he keeps this up, but he’ll have to get in line behind Grayson Rodriguez.   

Peek is a starter at low A.    This is his first taste of minor league ball, after being drafted by the Angels in. 2019 but, per that team’s custom, not pitching for the remainder of that summer.    I remember Luke had scouted him for the draft and liked his stuff, so I’m a little disappointed with him in the early going. 

Mattson is a reliever at AAA, and on the 40-man.   He hasn’t pitched much so far, so I don’t really make anything of his stats.   

There are threads over on the MiL forum on Bradish and Brnovich that give a good breakdown of their outings so far.

So what you are saying is people shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions based off of prospect rankings and the fact that Bundy was good in a SSS last year?

Good early returns. Elias can organize a minor league system and get guys to perform in that system.  Thats what he is good at.  I am interested to see if they guys will be prepared for the majors when thry come up and we won't know that for awhile.

He has been feasting on AA hitters: 1-0 with 0.00 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and 26 K in 13.2 IP.  Saw a highlight reel on twitter, and the curve and slider are filthy.  If he pitches this way in AAA, it's not going to take him long to get here.

If the O's think Bradish is going to be  really good we will not see him on the O's roster this year.
