A weekly look at our farm teams

Thought this might be a fun activity on Mondays when the minors are dark.

Last week, Norfolk went 1-5 against Jacksonville to run its record to 4-14.    They’ve played Jacksonville 12 times already in 18 games.   The Jumbo Shrimp are 4-2 when not playing Norfolk.   On the other hand, Norfolk’s other opponent, the Charlotte Knights, are 5-1 against the Tides but 2-10 against their other opponents.

Bowie went 4-2 against Richmond to run their record to 13-4.   Richmond is 8-4 against other teams.   Of the Baysox two previous opponents, Altoona (who the Baysox bested 3-2) is 9-4 against other teams, while Reading (who Bowie swept 6-0) is 3-9.   So collectively, Bowie’s opposition is 20-17 when playing other teams.   Not bad!

Aberdeen went 3-3 against Wilmington this week to run their record to 11-7.    They’ve played Wilmington 12 times already, going 8-4 against them.   Wilmington is 5-1 when playing other teams.  The Ironbirds’ other opponent, Hudson Valley, is 6-6 against other teams.

Delmarva went 4-2 against Carolina to run its record to 13-5.    Carolina is 8-4 against other opponents.    The Shorebirds previously went 3-3 against Salem, who are 8-4 against other teams, and swept the hapless Fredericksburg team, which is 1-11 against other opponents.   Overall, Delmarva’s opponents are 17-19 against other opponents even with Fredericksburg thrown in the mix.

This week, Norfolk hosts Charlotte (7-11), Bowie hosts Harrisburg (6-12), Aberdeen is at Brooklyn (7-10) and Delmarva hosts Lynchburg (13-5).

The farm really stepped it up this week. It'll be interesting to see how things go in a few weeks after all the promotions.

Agreed.   The teams may slow down a bit as top players move up a level and less dominant guys take their place.

Nice to see Norfolk have a good week, though against a fairly weak opponent.  Tough test this week with Durham.

Durham about to light up Norfolk.

There could be a Luis Patino-Dean Kremer matchup.    Kremer and Bradish should give them some competition, and bounceback chances for everyone else.    Also perhaps first time Orioles pitchers who will be on good Adley teams start work on getting Wander Franco out a bunch of nights in a row.

I get the Orioles four full-season affiliates at a cumulative run differential of +115 the first four weeks, 4th among AL teams.    But the Yankees, Mariners and Rays are the top three.

Tampa just 5 runs better net, all because of AAA where they have a hundred on us and we have a hundred on them at the other three levels.

AL affiliates come out about 550 runs better than NL affiliates, but 200 of that is the Nationals alone.

Something that keeps me going at the moment.  Frobby already provided the W/L records...but here is a bit of further context:

AA:  Bowie at 17-5 has the best record out of EVERY AA team in the minors.

A+:  Aberdeen at 15-7 appears* to have the best record out of every team at the high-A level.    (*I can't verify the High-A west teams for some reason at milb.com)

A-:  Delmarva at 17-6 has the best record out of every team at the low-A level.

Yeah AAA is trash but we are working from the bottom up here people!  The pipeline seems to be 3/5 complete!  :)

There’s a three way tie in the High A West at 15-9,    If Milb.com goes down, there’s always BB-ref: https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/league.cgi?id=0fcaaa77

In terms of why our teams are succeeding:

Bowie is first in the High A Northeast in runs/game and 5th/12 in fewest runs allowed per game.

Aberdeen is 4th/12 in runs per game in the High A East and 2nd in fewest runs allowed.

Delmarva is tops in the Low A East in runs/game and 3rd/12 in fewest runs allowed.

Tampa Bay is just a machine right now. That Bowling Green team is very good. Bowie went 8-4 against both Binghamton and Hartford but probably should have been 11-1. Fenter and Naughton out of the bullpen have been terrible. Norfolk just doesn't get a break with their schedule....
