People are always picking on Pedro Severino, but…

The team has a 5.08 ERA when Severino catches, 5.64 when Sisco catches, 7.56 when Wynns catches.   

The team is 21-34 (.382) when Severino starts at catcher, 4-15 (.211) when Sisco starts, 3-12 (.200) when Wynns starts.

Severino has been worth 0.3 rWAR, Sisco -0.3 rWAR, Wynns -0.2 rWAR.

Severino has a .619 OPS, Sisco has a .431 OPS, Wynns a .542 OPS.

I’m not saying Severino has been good.  I’m just saying if we’re going to replace a catcher again this season, I wouldn’t be starting with Severino.

These are interesting nuggets.  But even if the stats favor Severino, it still doesn't change the fact that I want to wash my eyes with bleach when he's catching.

That said, saying Severino is the best option of a bad bunch is like saying you're proud of your D because the two kids next to you got F's.  The 2022 catching situation has to include AR starting.  If Severino is the backup, I guess that's okay but I'd prefer someone else.

It would be interesting to know which starting pitchers each is catching because that would make a big difference.

I just want to see Cumberland promoted and Adley to AAA. I don't care if it's Wynns or Severino that go.

At a minimum you'd need to divide the staff into segments of (a) Means, (b) Matt Harvey and (c) everyone else for this to mean anything.

Wynns has played in 15 games.

I did a quick check and I counted Severino being the catcher for Means 7 times and Sisco 5 times, so right there they are going to have an advantage over Wynns.

The starting rotation outside of Means has been historically awful this season, and I don't think anyone of these three catchers is going to have a statistically significant effect on pitcher ERA with this staff.

But if you give me the choice of paying one of the other two the minimum or Pedro 2M I'm going with one of the other two.  Or Maverick because I'd totally promote a glove only college guy if those are my choices.

And you should add in runs scored from each catcher's passed balls, which are treated as unearned for ERA.

You can't easily quantify the effect of wild pitches while Pedro is catching that wouldn't have been wild pitches if someone else were catching, but I think we all know such an effect exists. [EDITED TO ADD THIS CUZ I JUST THOUGHT IF IT]

If Severino is playing MLB baseball next year it's likely going to be at the veteran minimum. If Severino gets paid more then that the state of MLB catching is worse than I thought it was.
