When the O's had Hill his arm was completely wrecked.  He looked as done as anyone, flinging up 88mph junkballs and getting absolutely hammered.  He's made a remarkable turn-around, I applaud him, he's also had a lot of personal tragedy.  But he's never been someone you could write in the rotation in pen for 30 starts.  He's always on the edge of breaking down.

If Rich Hill had this same career starting in 1950 he'd have been selling stuff door-to-door by '58 or '59.

Lopez has taken the ball every five days and generally been better than any starting pitchers other than Means and Zimmerman.  Both of them missed a significant chunk of the season.  He ain't good, but he has been better lately.

Yes but he reinvented himself. I think it was 2015 when he pitched for the Red Sox against us, it might have been his first start back, but he was excellent against us and has never looked back.

Lopez has been better in two August starts (2.25 ERA), but in June & July he posted a 7.20 ERA. I think Lopez has talent, but he's ultimately a bullpen arm or possible opener.

You may be right.  But, letting him pitch deeper into games on a team that's going nowhere right now isn't necessarily a bad thing.  And, maybe he's beginning to figure things out.  Maybe he becomes Rodrigo Lopez instead of Jorge.

I'd rather be wrong and see Lopez develop into a solid starter. The one upside of the team being this bad is the Orioles can continue to start Lopez for now, and maybe they luck into developing a starting pitcher.

I went and looked him up, it was in 2015, and in four September starts with the Red Sox, he was 2-1 with 36 Ks. he then signed with the As for 6 mill. He was 9-3 in 14 2016 starts, and was traded later that summer to the Dodgers. The rest as they say, is history, unless one chooses to ignore it.

Which pitchers did we sign before the 2016 season, and for how much? 

So yeah, we missed on Rich Hill, and it’s kind of disingenuous to use 2009 as a rebuttal to my comment and ignore 2015 and after.

And he walked 5 batters 2 starts ago.  I know he only gave up 1 hit but still. IIRC, he didn’t miss many bats and didn’t get many Ks

 That’s not some major sign that he is turning the corner either.

I think Lopez is some days better or worse, but basically he’s shown who he is. I doubt he’s part of a contending team, but he is definitely part of ours.
