Offseason Waiver Wire Thread

We’re going to have the #1 waiver wire spot all offseason. So here’s a good place to talk about any and all players that are available to be claimed.

So far this offseason we’ve claimed RP Bryan Baker from the Jays and IF Lucious Fox from the Royals.

Clint Frazier is out there in DFA land. Due $2.7mm in arbitration next year. He has 3 years of control left. There’s an argument to be made that we could claim him at 26 and upside, then non tender or trade Mancini.

The question is, why did Frazier fall off the "cliff" with exit velocity, barrel percentage and everything that tracks hitting the ball hard? It's pretty clear he can't hit offspeed pitches, but they didn't throw them more to him, he just stopped hitting the fastball this year. Saying that, with Mountcastle and Mancini, I don't see where he fits and I just don't see them giving away Mancini this offseason. I think he gets at least one more year to see if he can bring value next trading deadline.

I don't think he was healthy at any point in the season.

Vertigo, dizziness, blurred vision.  All bad signs particularly from someone who has a history of head trauma.

I wouldn't be shocked if his career is effectively over.

Thanks, didn't know that. Definitely not good signs for the young man.

Brian Roberts never really regained plus player status once his problems began.

I think I still feel like $2M here could be a better gamble than Tillman's $3M way back when...2020 Frazier looked like a real Age 25 step forward, at his 160 PA cherrypick level he was about 85th percentile wOBA, and 98th percentile in Chase Rate.

Of course I am peculiar enough of a fan I also won't be that upset if Trey gets an opportunity to pick his team for his Age 30 season.

I just read the MLB trade rumors article about the Yankees’ DFAs.

I was thinking we might be interested in Tyler Wade, but no, and Frasier is a disaster. They paid him for an arbitration raise of 2 1/2 million dollars. So also no. No, Steve Carell screaming no.

I was hoping we would claim Tyler Wade (love his speed), but the Yanks traded him to the Angels for Kean Wong.

I was interested in him too, depending on his defense, but I couldn’t find anything about his defense so I figured no.

I’m checking on every single player gets Designated, because we’ve got first crack at all of them.

Tillman $3 million was 100% wasted, I will never know why buck- or Dan-insisted on giving him a guaranteed contract when they knew he wasn’t healthy, and then kept hiding him from the press while insisting that everything was splendid, And refused to have any sort of contingency plan. That whole situation was a complete fiasco.

I think other examples would be more effective for bolstering your point

I picked the wasted Tillman comparison because I suspect Can of Corn's take is on base, but even if it is 50-85% likely Frazier is finished as an effective player, investing ~1 year/$2.25M on the chance he isn't is a risk the 2022 Orioles can take more easily than almost all 29 of the other Clubs.    The money is nothing to any of the teams; its just the choice to invest time, care and game repetitions in someone who may or may not work out.

Our top tier farm is mostly off the 40-man roster, but clubs that have been investing in all avenues a long time like the Dodgers, Rays and Yankees enjoy better ~41st guys than we have.    Not having Clint Frazier money feels kind of like not having Gary Thorne money.

We have the money, or the Orioles management has the money, to be more accurate, I just think it’s a waste of money, and as Tony has pointed out we don’t really have a need or place for him.
I checked all the designations, and my first thought is, “why didn’t Mike want this guy?” And then I look the guy up and I say, “oh.”

There’s some free agent signings I think we should’ve been involved in, like Jhoulys Chacin, for instance.

But I’m pretty confident we’re going to get the best of the dumpster guys.

3B Sheldon Neuse was DFAd by the LAD.

40 man upgrade over Bannon?  He’s put up good numbers in AAA, but in the PCL though. He’s been a K machine in the MLB.

It might be re-arranging deck chairs, but I’d be shocked if Bannon is claimed, and we’d get an Option B for 3B other than Guiterrez.

Are 40 man moves still do-able during the lockout?

Freddie Freeman ripples in pond as Dodgers designated Matt Beaty for assignment.

Seems like he would simply be better than DJ Stewart, and competitive $$$/WAR with Trey Mancini.   Dodgers probably will be asking Clubs for something while he is in DFA limbo.

Last year among MLB hitters with 200 PA, he was 177th of 362 in Chase Rate, almost exactly 50th percentile - right next to Pedro Severino.
