Denyi Reyes selected, Travis Lakins optioned, Ellis to 60-day IL

Guess they wanted a warm body for today's game and didn't want the 40-man roster implications of adding Vespi. Would expect Reyes to be DFA'd in a few days (perhaps when Adley comes up!)

Gilaspie threw three innings on Tuesday, Lowther started (poorly) yesterday.

Not sure why they didn't just go with Baumann, who is rested or Diplan if they only expected to need an inning or two today.

He was not. Hence the transfer of Ellis to the 60-man IL to open a 40-man spot. I listed the guys that are on the 40-man roster in the edited opening post. My point is that Reyes will almost certainly be DFA'd rather than optioned when sent down, which they wouldn't want to do with Vespi, had they called him up instead.

Oh, OK, I am at work and social media is blocked on the network here.   So I could not see the tweet, only your thread title and post which did not mention Ellis at all.

Gotcha, rough workplace you have. I changed the verb in the opening post to "selected" which is the term for players that are added to the 40-man roster and the active roster at the same time, and also added Ellis's transfer for the sake of completeness.

It's only been a couple years that I have had outside internet on my desk.   I work in a DoD classified environment so the main computer on my desk is on that network and doesn't connect to the [unclassified] outside world.

For a long time there was one unclass terminal in our entire office (20+ people) that we could access if we needed to send an outside e-mail or something that was work related.

Then about five or six years ago we got unclass terminals in each cubicle, so I shared one with two other people for a while.   And I usually work 10-6:30 while my cube-mates worked an earlier shift and were gone by 4, so late afternoon I could log on and stay logged on once they were gone.

Then a few years go we each got an unclass terminal on our desk.

So this is luxury to me.   Not being able to see social media doesn't bother me that much.

It's possible he comes up and gets DFA'd without getting in a game. Didn't they do that to Eddie Gamboa? Two of the three guys they used last night are now optioned so the bullpen should be pretty fresh.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect to see him unless the game is out of hand.

I figured a site like the OH would be considered social media.  But then I'm assuming the DoD saw that it was about the Orioles and figured there wasn't a threat to anyone.

Why would they DFA Reyes when he has options remaining?

    • I don’t feel picked on — I didn’t offer much detail regarding the changes I am hoping for. If my initial post didn’t sound like it, I do have more patience (at least a little more) than most. It may take more than a minute to get depth in the bullpen or an offense that can adjust in crunch time. I get that. I’m not in the torches and pitchforks crowd, but the O’s can’t sit on their hands either. That’s closer to where I’m at.
    • I kept hoping, for the sake of my own enjoyment, that I'd eventually come around after having to look at it often enough, but, no, I still think it's ugly as sin. And I hate how it plays.
    • Yeah, but after he was called back up and changed his pitch mix, in his last 8 starts he had a 9.4 SO/9.
    • I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if he changed nothing in terms of strategy.  Look at what he traded recently right handed batters. I feel like it is more important to him to be innovative, and develop players that have been forgotten or have failed in the major leagues than it is to actually win a World Series. Obviously, that’s the end goal of all the things he’s doing, but he wants to do it in a way that looks innovative, and it looks like he knows more about the players that failed and how to fix them than any other person. I honestly believe that is why Hyde has been here so long. He does everything that he’s told and they don’t want to bring in a manager that won’t do that. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a lineup made up for him every day and I also wouldn’t be surprised if the whole game plan was planned out for him. What do you do when and where.. Obviously the numbers mean a lot in baseball and are extremely  helpful but they’re not everything.
    • I'll celebrate whoever we get in a high echelon of MLB talent, but unfortunately unpacking this season too soon I think I don't even really want to win the Burnes bidding. Elias will value the next half season of information on Felix, Grayson and Bradish to figure out who goes with Eflin.     The growth he showed this year winning the Burnes and Eflin trade markets adds confidence he'll staff the top of the pitching roster appropriately in July 2025. If he is very risk averse with Kremer, Povich and Suarez, people would flip out but people like Kyle Gibson, Patrick Corbin and Jose Quintana hit me as safe innings he might actually pursue.
    • The team's valuation only matters at time of sale. The owner's wealth in an uncapped sport like MLB determines how much the team can spend. Steve Cohen by any metric available has tons more millions to SPEND than Hal Steinbrenner. Steve Cohen has even operated at a deficit over 100 million before which I believe was in 2023. And most importantly he has the WILL to get into the deepest of pools when it comes to FA as he has already shown in his short time owning the Mets.
