Blake Snell available?

I have no interest in Snell unless they see a huge issue with his mechanics.  He basically has been worth less then 1 War per year in 5 of 6 seasons.  He has had 1 great year and the other 5 just average pitcher who has gotten worse. He also is injury prone and you also  Take in you have to pay him about 23 million over next year and a half.  Hard pass in him.

Right team wrong target. The guy on SD for us to look at is Dinelson Lamet.  The Pads are trying to dump his $4.1 million salary.

Help me understand. What's this guy's upside? I see he's been in the majors for several years now with meh success.

Snell would be a good target.  A solid lefty SP would counter LH hitters while the canyon limits damage to RF against RH hitters in OPACY.

Snell limits HH%.  The increase in BB could be related to increase in CB usage and movement (big change in that pitch profile from 2020 to 2021).  If he can harness that and throw it for strikes, it would likely allow his FB to play up late in the count.  Maybe even something a 'pitch to the middle and trust your stuff' would help.

A 201 ERA+ and 4th in CY voting in 2020 is meh?  He's been hurt and was a reliever in 2021 as a result.  He was sent down this year, so he's in the minors, but seemingly having success in the minors as well, but only currently as a 1 IP reliever.

Lol. I saw 69 IP and figured he wasn't a full time guy. Then you posted this and I remembered that thing they call a pandemic.

If Elias wants guys with 2+ years of service time (which makes sense) than Snell isn’t an option.

But getting him for very little, if that can be done, is something they should be trying to do regardless of his service time.  You can still acquire other guys with more service time.

Exactly. He’s a high upside arm, that the Padres don’t have time to fool around with. We could let him sort himself out next year, and possibly have a legit rotation arm next year, or we non tender him. Low risk move.

I watched him against the Dodgers last night.  The stuff is still nasty.

Struck out 12 in 5 innings and missed 22 bats!  He has a swingstr% of 26% this year.

But yea, Tate, Santander or Mancini can bring back a better, more cost controlled arm all by themselves.  lol.

The only thing that bothers me is that he's gone after the 2023 season.   I admit he's an interesting arm to go after.

How's DeJong doing?

Why not a Santander for Yardborough+ deal from Tampa? Tampa needs OFers and Yardborough gets a more pitcher friendly park in a division he knows well. Also signed through 2024?I believe?

Yarbrough looks a lot like a non-tender candidate from here.   He's maybe a decent example of a Rays assembly line player who is good enough through Arb2.    He's already been left off a playoff roster and relegated to Up/Down status this year despite decent career accomplishments.

Yes he would improve the floor for the 2023 Orioles pitching 1425 innings but believe he'll be available to that for just $$$, and its such a low bar to clear.

Snell...I kind of feel like it being 1.3 years not 2.3 years is a feature not a bug for keeping it short-term with pitchers.   If Orioles $$$ could help the Padres with their cap and get him on to our staff with that not talent, it'd be wonderful.

If anything, the O's should try to trade for him and extend him.  This organization is so risk adverse it's ridiculous.

It bothers me too.  But if the report from the initial post is true and you can add him without giving up much, I think it’s worth it.  Maybe you extend him.  Or maybe you can deal him a year from now for more than you are giving up now.

    • I disagree Mayo is one of the reasons the Orioles have not hit well.  Emmanuel Rivera, who has hit well with an .879 OPS since he joined the O's, has gotten the playing time over Mayo.
    • I was sort taking that as a fait accompli. Signing expensive long-term free agent deals for one dimensional sluggers heading into their 30s definitely does not seem like Elias's style, especially when an extra high draft pick (and accompanying extra bonus pool money) is the reward for not doing so.
    • Game 153, Sept. 19 Lots of notable defensive plays today.   Kjerstad made two excellent catches, one going back and towards the RCF alley that (per Kevin Brown) was a 50% probability catch, and another going back to the wall near the corner and making the catch at close to full speed.   Holliday snared a line drive at the top of his leap, and also made a nice backhand running catch of a soft fly into medium RF. Mullins made a diving catch in the 7th on a sinking liner that he got a great jump on.   In the 9th, with runners on 1st and 2nd, Heliot hit a liner in the RCF gap that carried much further than it first appeared it would.   Mullins and Slater dove for it simultaneously and Slater actually gloved it for a second before it popped out while Slater landed on Mullins.  Luckily, the two base runners totally misread the play, and after Slater quickly scrambled to his feet and threw the ball in, the runner originally on 2B scored but the runner on 1st only advanced to 2B, and the batter had to stop at first.  The O’s were able to keep any further runs from scoring. One thing I’ve noticed about Manny Rivera is that he’s very slow charging bunts and slow rollers/choppers. He handled one bunt and one chopper in front of him today and both times the runner beat his throw rather easily, something that has happened a lot when Rivera has manned 3B.   I’m more than ready to have Urias -and/or Westburg back at the hot corner.
    • Don’t know what happened to him on here but I did meet him and some others from The Sun forums at the park on Matt Wieters first game as an Oriole. If I recall correctly his name was Patrick.  He seemed like a good dude but he did have his face painted and was wearing those big hulk hands…which did strike me as a little odd for a grown man but to each his own.
    • ….as long as it’s not us
    • Is it just me or did they sound the HR / walk-off siren before the ball actually went out?
