I literally said in 2 threads he was a good GM! Want me to do a blood sacrifice? You guys are in a cult lol.

Why are you preparing for disappointment if you think he’s a good GM?

Down on his drafting but think his trades and FA acquisitions have been top notch?

I am sure you read national outlets, they all find out draft strategy unorthodox. Most call it weird, bizarre or thrifty. Yet, despite overwhelming info available to them, they will defend every single thing he does to the end. I don’t get it. Elias clearly does a good job overall, why not call out his mistakes fairly? I just don’t get it. When you are rebuilding, you want to be strong up the middle (Adley, check) but taking two corner OFers when a potential franchise SS (or two) are available is puzzling. I would not have taken Kerjstad but I get that approach for that draft. I do. Last year he got too cute imo.

and to your point, endless threads on anyone that dares criticize Elias picks, but no discussion why we aren’t going over our draft pool despite huge cost cutting/savings in recent years? Big picture!

So Nelson, most national media outlets think the Orioles draft strategy is bizarre and weird.  Care to point some of those out to the cult so we can read it to?

A lot to prove in FA. Very disappointed last off-season. Player development was our weakest link by far, and you gotta recognize the improvement there, plus international.  His drafts are good overall it’s just that first.

There was a link to a YouTube video, not national. Just read the mocks and go on you tube, commentary similar, not hard to find.

Maybe you mis worded it.  You said ALL national media outlets find the Orioles draft strategy unorthodox and MOST think its bizarre and weird.

So, you think Elias has no control on budget since he moved back the wall, opened up camps in the DR and had Davis retire early?

You don't think it falls on the GM, at all, that he can't convince ownership to pony up another 600K?

I had never even thought of going over as a serious consideration. I know it's all the rage this year, particularly with Mets conversation, but I think the teams themselves don't want all of the teams doing that because in the end all it will do is raise the price across the board.

That said, yes, I wish Elias went over by 5%, but no, I don't think ownership supports doing so. These soft caps + penalty have been effective across sports with the exception of the richest teams. I don't see the MLB draft being much different, but I could be wrong.

20 MLb teams went over within the 4.9% threshold last year.  There is zero reason not to do this.

    • I would bet there are people in their mid to late 40's that don't remember the O's World Series win.  My dad wasn't a big sports guy and back then family's had one TV.  I don't remember much about sports before the O's coming up just short in 1982.  Definitely don't remember 1979 World Series even though I was 9.

    • No, you're right. That's a good point.
    • I’m just saying that just because you are in great shape, doesn’t mean you will age well. I thought it would be a big help to Davis and it wasn’t.
    • This conversation is the definition of baseball is a business. Losing Santander and the things he does well is going to suck. Keeping him and having time win on a bad contract would suck. Considering that they've drafted predominantly on the offensive side, they have to give him the QO and allocate the resources to the pitching and other areas of need.
    • The Mountcastle question rely depends on Mayo and your plan for him.  Is he a first baseman?  Is he a first base/RFer/DH?  If he’s not a RFer, I don’t see how you bring back Mounty. While you need to be more right handed, I think Mounty being at first and what we have behind him hurts his value for the Os.
    • Haha true. But that was $161 million. I'm proposing something more like the JJ Hardy deal (adjusted for inflation).  Hardy was only worth 1.7 WAR over those last 3 years, so I guess it was a "bad deal" on paper. But he helped the O's get back to the playoffs in 2016 and he helped to anchor a young infield.
