He also knows Orioles history.  He says a few interesting things every once in a while, which is why he’s superior to Newman.

Garceau is the type of guy I would like to have a beer with and listen to him tell stories about older Oriole stuff.

Melanie knows plenty.  She’s not a good radio PBP person because she has trouble describing fast-moving events.  But she’s knowledgeable and hard working.  On TV I don’t mind her

Choosing between her and Garceau is not a good set of options.

I haven’t heard anything from her that would make me call her knowledgeable but admittingly, I haven’t heard her much.

Why isn’t literally anyone else doing this series? Rob Long? Melanie? Tony? Frobby? Bigbird? Literally anyone else…

I think/thought the girl commentator is monotone and just plain boring. Problem with Garceau is he’s way past his prime. We really need our next (pick your poison). Thompson, Miller, Angel etc.

He knows Oriole history so well that Friday night he referred to Padres /ex-Ray pitcher Blake Snell as Nate Snell.   Nate Snell spent a year or two in the Oriole bullpen 35 years ago.

Melanie might not have a voice that people love, nor is she as good at fast-moving calls as Kevin Brown, but she definitely does her homework.  I don't mind her at all.

Scott is such a classy guy on top of it all. I'd like the Orioles to find their crew and stick with it next year. Kevin Brown should be the new Thorne. He's play by play for every game unless he has something else going on nationally. Then I think Geoff Arnold is the back up guy for PBP.

Scott is perfect for the in studio stuff.

The old 32-year old rookie who the Orioles thought was 29-years old until he had to get a passport to go to Japan with the team. Snell was such an interesting story who had to overcome racism in the South in the late 60's, turning down two separate offers from major league teams, getting taken in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft, and being released all before finally making his debut in September of 1983.

If anyone wants more on Snell, check out out his great bio on Sabr at https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/nate-snell/ .

What an interesting life. Thanks for sharing

While Kevin Brown is clearly the best current PBP option on the O's broadcast, I don't think Newman is awful.  Garceau on the other hand is.  20 years ago when Garceau was younger and his voice was better things might have been different.  But as one example (of many) his play call of Rutschman's game tying HR the other day had all the emotions of a funeral.  I think he'd be fine as a studio guy and I have no doubt he bleeds orange and black, but he's just in over his head as a PBP guy.

Melanie is fine as a studio host but her play by play is very amateur-ish. Especially her home run calls.

I was on the message board of one of the Orioles opponents who was watching the game on the Orioles feed. They were shocked that Melanie was an actual part of the play by play team and thought she was a fan who won some sort of "announce an inning of an O's game" contest. 😄

    • What is unsettling to me is in how much better a position the team appeared to be in last year at this (approximate) time.
    • I love the Orioles but after the last three decades it is no longer unconditional love anymore from me.  The Orioles are going to have to put out once in a while to keep my interest.  They got to let us go all the way once in a while.
    • The Baltimore Orioles are still one of the best teams in all of baseball.  They still have an awful lot going for them.  Unfortunately, the while the distance between World Series winner and close but no cigar is not that much in the overall win column during the season, the things they need to go right, and the things they need to do to improve are still pretty massive. Compounding this is the fact that they can do everything necessary and it is still possible it won't work.  I don't say that as an excuse.  Elias is going to be measured by playoff appearances and the success that brings.  He has been engineer of two playoff teams and a near miss.  He still has as many wins with his near miss and his rebuilding teams in the playoffs as his two playoff teams.  It is certainly fine to criticize that. Of course he says it is on him.  One because it is, and two because any good GM would do the same.  But the Orioles are no longer building towards being good.  They are good and no one is going to give them anything.  There is work to be done to make this team better positioned to compete in the post season.   And the Angelos family is no longer a hinderance. I am as disappointed as everyone else and in general I am a root for the uniform not the player guy.  These guys have been fun to root for, but the second half and this playoff run was tough to stomach.  I hope that to give this team the chance to compete, they add a #1 TOR pitcher and another playoff caliber starter before the season starts.  I also hope they add a playoff experienced RH bat.  Trade, sign, whatever.  The window is open.  Whatcha gonna do?
    • Fire himself so he can go work for a larger market team maybe...
    • I doubt any GM has ever done that.  Maybe he can be the first, he could hold a big press conference and everything.  Go Elias, go!
    • Elias is also a known liar.  So take what he says with a grain of salt.
