Cade Povich 2022

First bad start since coming over in the trade.

The good news is that he struck out 7, only gave up 4 hits and had a 71% str%.

But 2 walks, 2 homers and 5 runs allowed in 5 IP.

Struck out the first three batters of the game.  They say he's 6'3'' 180 but he looks a lot taller than that.   Fastball sitting 91-92 and touching 94 and the curveball looks to be a real weapon for him.  His curve is 74-76 and his slider is 84-85.  Looks like he is comfortable throwing both breaking balls whenever he wants and even when behind.  Throws a lot of strikes and when he missed, he just misses outside zone.  He gets a lot of his Ks on the breaking pitches and when they don't swing and miss, they are driving it into the ground.   His fast ball is sneaky because he throws so many breaking pitches.  He had 5ks through 2ip to start the game.  He threw a ton of groundballs tonight which was nice to see.  I think there were only 4 balls hit in the air.  Pretty dominating performance.  I'm a fan.

Relieved GRod tonight and was terrible.

No idea why they used him that way though.

To keep him pitching on his regular day, I assume.  Grayson was never going to throw more than 3 innings so there were always going to be plenty of innings for Povich to piggyback.  

His command wasn’t good and the ump had a tight strike zone.  He also was victimized by a very good bunt with a runner on 1st and nobody out.   Handley made a nice play to try to get the batter but he beat it by a half-step.

Povich gets the ball for the Tuesday-Sunday two step at Akron with an opportunity to pitch the Baysox into the Eastern League playoffs.

Norby, Mayo and Williams all reached and scored in the top of the 1st to give him at least three runs to work with out of the gate.

Not ruling out a jump in ability in 2023, but I feel like he’ll be a 2024 guy for the Os. I don’t think he has the physicality quite yet. Saying that, the analytics guys will get ahold of him this off-season, so maybe the jump happens sooner. I just feel like he needs time.

He has been pretty underwhelming since going to AA, so I tend to agree.  I’m guessing he starts in AA next year but I guess that depends on what happens this offseason and how he looks in camp.

Thanks. Reminds me a bit of Matusz in both body and action to the plate. I did notice that despite the strikeouts there are a ton of guys on base in most of the clips. Might be because of the amount of traffic but I was waiting to see the difference between his windup and stretch but it looks like he was pitching exclusively from the stretch even without guys on base.
