It's a nice problem to have.  If you start at SS, there's plenty of places for you to shift down the defensive spectrum.  

Surprised, how underrated he is - young for his level,  developing power, can steal bases and hits for average.

I’m a big fan.  Love his swing.  He’s a strong kid, think he’s going to surprise a lot of people.

I think we are doing the same thing, or at least trying to with centerfielders. We obviously have Mullins in the bigs, but it just hit me that we have drafted Haskin, Cowser, Beavers and Fabian recently...and some think Rhodes might be able to play center. There is such a shortage of solid centerfielders in MLB these days, and we might have a heck of a group at some point soon.

- Jordan Westburg is slumping a bit right now but has had a solid system switching between SS, 2B and 3B.

- Joey Ortiz had a slow start this season but has destroyed AA the last five weeks and is considered the best defender at SS in our system.  

- We just drafted high school SS phenomenal Jackson Holliday at 1:1.   He figures to start at Delmarva next year and move fast.   

- We also paid a large overslot bonus to SS Carter Young to lure him from transferring from Vanderbilt to LSU.

It’s going to be fascinating to see how this logjam at SS sorts itself out over the next 1-4 years.

I tried a back of napkin exercise to do a mock 26 man roster for opening day of 2024. That is only 1 year plus away, and yet there were just too many possibilities, largely due to the SS position. Really any of the options could be viable in the medium to long term. 

The fact we drafted Holliday makes me think the most likely path forward is for Gunnar to come up as a 3B, while Mateo holds down SS until '25 or so when Holliday is ready (and Jorge's salary starts to go up). Urias can give way to Westburg when he is ready. (That still leaves out Vavra, Prieto, and Ortiz in addition to Urias, but those are the next guys up if Mateo stops hitting or Westburg doesn't work out).  

Still, Mateo's viability is very tenuous and Holliday is only 18. There are plenty of other ways this could shake out.

I do not like WAR that is propped up by defensive metrics. Mateo is worth 10 runs saved in fielding in 105 games when hes never put up defense numbers like that before in his career. At this rate he will be over 15 runs saved for the season. That isnt sustainable unless you're Simmons or Smith or somebody like that.

 

His is a below average hitter and hitting is the primary method 99% of non catchers add value to their team.
