Why would they use a 40 man roster spot for that? They could just bring up Handley if Ramirez and Roberts aren’t good enough, no?

Could it be that Chirinos is heading out? Gallagher up to replace him?

How close is Handley to being ready?  I know he's a defense first catcher.  The bat only has to be better than Chirinos which shouldn't be hard.

When Bemboom, Cumberland and Nottingham went down it did not just effect AAA. It meant there was no backup if Adley or Chirinos went down.   That is why they used a 40 man spot for Gallagher.  He is a proven major league back up catcher.

Handley is a year away from the majors most likely.  He has not played at AAA yet and we don't know if he will hit at that level much less the majors.   But I think he will be protected on the 40 man roster this off season.

Very good defensive catcher who has spent his career backing up an excellent catcher in Salvador Perez. I think this is a nice jump on your backup catcher hole for next year, while also filling the need at AAA this season. He would be a sizable upgrade on Chirinos right now, and if the O's can't find anyone else this offseason, Gallagher is a solid option.

Here's some reasons why Gallagher might be here next year as the backup:

Here's him stealing strikeouts with great pitch framing:

Here he is blocking pitches in dirt. Very much a wall.

Throwing runners Out:

Quality back up, and a big sturdy guy. Thanks for sharing that.

34% CS in the minors.  21% in the majors.    Probably has a good arm even if the ML percentage is not great.   Not bad though.   Had a .622 and .677 OPS in the two years he had over 100 AB's.    He's pretty much guaranteed that many AB's if it's just him and Adley.   Only 7 homers in 468 PA.

I note that Gallagher is arbitration-eligible.  Will Elias keep him beyond 2022 and tender him a contract?

His framing numbers are solid.

That seems like the motivation behind signing him now.   You are the expert.   How much can this guy expect to get in arbitration?   He might be happy to have a ML job so maybe they can work something out.   He made 885K this year.   What's it going to take?    1.2M  1.5M    Can he get more than that?   Will he try?   He might price himself out of a job.

Coincidentally, Chirinos made 900K this year.

They might offer Gallagher 1M this winter and if he declines, just cut him loose.

He does walk a good bit. Could have a decent OBP. Has no pop.

If he walks, that's good enough.  As long as he's not making outs, I don't care if he doesn't have any pop.  I think we gotta get past the idea of having a backup catcher that can hit.  If that catcher could hit, he'd probably have a starting job somewhere.  If we have a good catcher who can block balls, call a good game and handle the staff and not be a complete liability with the bat, that's probably as good as it'll get.

Or we could have had Adley and Jonah Heim.

Check out that second link, it's a heck of a play.

    • Yeah like Tony T but Tony has the ability to foul pitches at will.  I want Cowser to be more like @waroriole’s Rob Refsnyder and Holliday to be Steven Kwan.  Is that too much to ask of number one picks?  But I love Cowser and most of everything he brings.
    • I can't say The Wall gives me all warm fuzzies but it doesn't swing at pitches a foot outside the zone or take a meatball right down the middle of the plate. It doesn't fail to move a runner over or lay down a decent sacrifice bunt. I've never seen it fail to get a hit with a runner in scoring position. At some point The Wall will probably be modified some but you build your team to play best in their home ball park. It's called home field advantage. IMO, Westy is the best right handed bat we have right now for this park. We need someone else like Westy that plays outfield. Bregman would be nice but I don't see it because of Westy and I have hopes Holliday becomes the OBP lead off hitter we need. Note - I'm still pissed but it's getting better. I think I'll live for another season.
    • I’d like to see a study showing that team spending is more closely correlated to owner net worth than team revenue.  There are rare instances where a team owner will subsidize spending (e.g., Cohen) but that’s the exception not the rule - and note that Cohen owns 97% of the Mets vs a much lower % for Rubinstein.  Rubinstein has already been explicit that he is not in this to lose money.
    • Cowser’s  swing decisions are determined before the pitch is even thrown. And I’ve been saying this all year, and I even said this at the game. I go it’s too early to pinch it for him because his defense is too good but he is 100% going to strike out and that’s exactly what he did with bases loaded. He decides whether he is going to swing a pitch before even thrown This is why he swings at a pitch thrown pretty close to his face . And To be fair, he  had a pretty good season doing that but obviously can be  easily exploited
    • Cowser's progress was one of the more encouraging elements this season, especially on the defensive side. I was already crediting him with being Some Kind of Good major leaguer a post back. Between his and Adley's standout bad performances on the HBP and 2-0 count, I give Cowser more of a grace.     Sure he had predetermined intent to swing, but I think the follow through was some raw instinct as hand bones fractured. Adley not swinging was the lowlight how incapacitated he was.    I believe he commands the strike zone, but to feel so low you can't pull the trigger in that spot...sheesh.
    • I believe Elias plans to bring in two more SP's, the quality isnt what im sure about. But no question he'll want to replace Burnes. Which is why I didnt comment in this thread yet because Povich might not have a spot open at the beginning of the year.
    • So a “Pollyanna” then like me, @wildcard and others (joking of course) 😇 I’m in your camp but really wonder if Elias/Hyde and Co. can truly“flip the script” as @Just Regular alludes.
