Correa opts out…should the Os pursue him?

He didn’t opt out to get a 4 year deal.

Exactly. I wouldn’t go after him. He’s looking at 6-8 years, I assume. Defense should decline and while he’s a good hitter, I don’t see him as a hitter worthy of 35M+ for a substantial period of time. I’d focus on short term deals for a SP at a high AAV.

Carlos Correa - all 875 MLB starts in the field at shortstop

Gunnar Henderson - positioned at shortstop in ~65% of Minors games by his Club.

The wear and tear on shortstops is cumulative and I can't rule out that the Orioles have a better mousetrap protecting Gunnar Henderson's joints for the long haul.     It'd be a distinctive development pattern, compared to how MLB shortstops are mostly trained.

Certainly it'll be good news for the long haul if in three years Henderson, Westburg, Ortiz, Hernaiz and Holliday are all among the planet's 30 best shortstops that summer.     Bring on the trades!

The Tejada deal way back when was mid-December.

I just commented about this on the "3 Moves" thread.

I would pursue him.  Would 4/130 do it?

He just opted out of a deal that was going to pay him $35M for each of the next two years. I'd guess it's going to take at least 6/210, and that's before teams with deep pockets start a bidding war.

I wouldn’t go after him at all.  I wanted him last year but things have changed since then.

Gunnar looks like he can be a good SS.  Ortiz has Re-established himself.  You drafted Holliday because he’s a SS.

Just don’t see the logic behind doing it…not anymore.

This is exactly where I'm at. I just don't see the need after adding Gunnar. Spend the money on pitching instead.

I thought he made sense last offseason, but this is it: Things have changed for the franchise.  Not least of which is the performance of the man you failed to mention: Jorge Mateo.

Mateo isn’t a consideration for me, which is why I didn’t mention him.

But sure, his presence for the 2023 season could be argued as another reason.

Well I think you undervalue him but he's one, of a few, bridge options to Holliday, and one must assume that Holliday is the long term plan at SS, and he's only a few years away.
